About the Game
Drive massive trains across beautiful, challenging landscapes. Deliver cargo between industries, spread over an open world. Earn money, buy new licenses and advance your career as a train engineer, all in seamless, emergent experience. For PC and VR.

256 km² of unrestricted open world, where you can walk or drive trains uninterrupted. Covered in rich vegetation, landscape, water bodies, and an extensive railroad network, the world spans numerous diverse industries and towns. Experience seamless day and night cycles, with dynamic clouds, fog, rain and sounds spicing it all up. Change switches, drive, haul and leave trains at desired locations - the choice is yours.

Advance your career by taking deliveries and earning money. Master efficient driving and look after vehicles to minimize fuel and repair costs. Buy new items and licenses that grant you access to more vehicles and orders. Optionally, you can also play in sandbox mode where economy is not in focus - where you can just have fun doing anything you want without consequences.

Take part in a dynamic industrial chain, where deliveries are procedurally generated for more than 80 cargo types. The output of locations varies, and almost no two deliveries are the same. Haul cargo between industries, or do the shunting and logistics that help the stations create more deliveries. Pick orders and move cargo as desired, according to your own plans, licensing and hauling capacity.

Experience in-depth intricacies of six realistic, accurate steam and diesel locomotive classes with varying transmission types, plus some extra vehicles. Through behavior, sounds, physics and interaction, their characteristics are designed to fully immerse and challenge you. On top of that, you'll find yourself spontaneously involved in coupling, servicing, brake securing, shunting and other railroad procedures.

As a side activity, you may find yourself investing time and money finding and restoring unique locomotive variant derelicts, which you can then customize with numerous useful gadgets. Gadgets are various devices that can improve driving performance, such as digital speedometers, clinometers, colored ambient lights, distance trackers, etc. You can buy them in shops and install them wherever you want, using various tools.

Built from the ground up for both PC and VR, Derail Valley lets you experience it spatially present with the supported mainstream PC VR devices - truly inside the simulator and using your own hands to operate the controls. This is the ultimate, closest experience to being a real railroader! You can seamlessly alternate your progress between the PC and VR sessions, as you prefer.

Be it a derailment, collision, blown traction motor, boiler explosion, brake failure, HAZMAT disaster or even something as mild as wheelslip on a rainy slope, Derail Valley doesn't just present you with a popup screen when you make a mistake - you get to experience the full consequences of your actions, even if they're a rare occurrence.
Whether you are new to trains or an experienced veteran, the game features tutorials that are quick to get you going. A comprehensive user manual also exists, for when you want to dive deep into the details.

Official update history
Hey everyone!
About This Patch
We have a small and quick update today. Two days ago, Unity, the game engine that Derail Valley is based on, announced a newly discovered security vulnerability and a patch for it (more info here).
We included the patch in Derail Valley today, for increased safety. No confirmed exploits have been observed so far in any Unity-based games, so no one should be affected - this is just precautionary.
That said, we advise you all to update the game as soon as possible, now that the vulnerability is publicly known. This update doesn't include any changes to the game itself, only the engine.
About Build 100
While we're here, it is a good opportunity to give you a quick update on B100, the next major update:
The work is deep in progress, now with concretely defined goals of what we aim the end result to be. Most of the team is currently undergoing low level infrastructural changes necessary to future-proof the game, before we can even start the actual development on the new features. This will take months.
As announced earlier, B100 will take a long time both to announce and to release, and we may be a bit quiet in the meantime while that's ongoing - potentially with some info here and there, like this. Thank you for your patience and if you've missed previous mentions of the update, please read about it here:

Have fun in the meantime and thank you!

Hello everyone!
We've released another set of minor fixes today. Thank you for your bug reports! You can see the changes listed here:
In the meantime we're hard at work on the next major update, B100. It’s going to take a long time, but it’ll be absolutely worth it! For more information, please see:

To spice it up a little, we've also added a new ladder-climbing feature, now allowing you to seamlessly walk onto locomotives to climb up, without jumping. You can also climb ladder-equipped cars and buildings, adding to the immersion. For the full listing of what's new, please see:
As previously announced, we're already working on the next major update, B100. It will likely take a very long time to do, but also be absolutely worth it! For more information, please see:

We just released a small patch to fix a critical saving bug introduced a few days ago.
For players who had items placed in hangers or sticky tapes mounted somewhere outside of trains, the game wasn't able to save progress. The number of affected users should be small, but the issue still warranted the hotfix.

The patch also includes a couple more bug fixes we made in the past two days. You can see the changelog here: https://www.derailvalley.com/changelog
Thanks,

More improvements soon!
Enjoy the update and see you soon with more small updates!

We've listened to all your feedback over the weekend, and have just fixed all the issues introduced in #92, regarding stability and vegetation.
Inventory order will no longer shuffle when you restart the game, items won't pop out of your hands or the Boombox, and belt orbs will work in VR now.

We've also done some minor fixes to vegetation, such as grass having too short render distance on the High setting, or it being too tall in yards. It was lowered just enough so that the rails are now clearly visible.
These were the issues with the vanilla game -- note that mods could cause their own issues.
Have fun playing!
-Your DV team
Stability:
- Fixed inventory order getting messed up, as of #92
- Fixed belt slots in VR not working when on vehicles, as of #92
- Fixed items falling out of players hands when going from one vehicle to another, as of #92
- Fixed cassette falling when placed in Boombox while on vehicle, as of #92
World:
- Increased grass render distance on High settings
- Reduced grass height in yards
- Reduced grass popping
- Improved shading and shape dynamics of green crop plants
If you're affected (a few players)
(your items and/or money are missing since updating to #88, and you own the caboose)
Unfortunately you'll need to roll back to the save before #88, if you wish to retrieve the lost items/money. To do this, follow these steps:
- Update Derail Valley (restart Steam to make sure the hotfix is downloaded and applied)
- In Steam Library right click Derail Valley > Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files...
- In the new window go to folders DerailValley_Data > SaveGameData
- Rename the file "savegame" to something else (e.g. "savegame-88-broken")
- Make a copy of the file "savegame_old_version5"
- Rename that copy to just "savegame"
This way you'll have replaced your current save with the latest working backup. Now you should be able to start the game, and it will continue where you left off in #87 without issues. Side note: in the future Derail Valley will feature a proper in-game save manager.
If you're not affected (most players)
(you have all your items/money, don't own the caboose, or you didn't update to #88 yet)
You can continue playing normally. This update won't affect you.

Despite thorough testing, both internally and with beta testers before releasing updates, this one slipped through. We're sorry for the inconvenience!
