About the Game
"Parabole has created a stunning game of duality, effortlessly blending survivalism with detective work and well-researched history with dying folklore."
- Stephen Turner, destructoid
"It’s tremendous at creating its distinct atmosphere and then drawing you deeper in. It’s witty, spooky, and achieves an ideal sense of urgency. Weird, clamant and intriguing, this is well worth a look."
- John Walker, Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Official update history
Yet another patch fixing issues raised by players and bringing some other improvements.
PCVR
Room-scale: walking around your room no longer brings up a black veil. If you drift too far, your body fades to hands only and a small RECENTER prompt shows, which we recommend you do because the game is not made to handle out of body experience.
The upper body now follows your head when you lean, including a slight lean back.
Redesigned the wrist pause button on Index and Steam Frame controllers (watch gesture on the off hand). It’s now hidden on Touch controllers.
Survivor mode’s dark red object highlight is back in VR, somehow it got replaced at some point.
Internal HDR rendering on PCVR to reduce colour banding in dark areas.
Graphics
Shadow atlas resolution now scales with Shadow Quality (Very High 8K, High 4K, Medium 4K).
Light shadows are prioritised by role, so the flashlight and headlights always keep theirs.
World
Fixed a terrain seam near the car crash.
Survivor: invisible walls at the broken bridge so you can no longer fall in and get stuck. The snowmobile lane is still passable.
Localization
Polish: fixed oversized accented letters (like ą) and improved the handwritten font’s spacing.
Steam
The Kona soundtrack is now a proper Steam Soundtrack, with MP3 plus an optional FLAC download, a track list, cover art and a store page in 8 languages.
Hopefully I will not spam you with daily updates from now on, since things are looking more stable.
Cheers!
Alex
Another patch drop.
I figured why updates were 1.5gb in size even with small changes, but that means one last big update... so, sorry about that!
Release Notes
Fixed missing music bundles causing a fatal loading screen, including near the cavern. Essential world-loading failures still stop the game safely.
Game data is no longer compressed as one block, so future patches should download much less.
Fixed the main menu Play button staying highlighted after the mouse moves away.
Fixed the snowmobile key at the generator building not being picked up correctly.
Fixed snow looking see-through near some fences and at the entrance to Bédard’s house.
Documents and letters are easier to read in dark places (reduced reading light intensity and adjusted eye adaptation).
Made ajustments to prevent wolves from sinking into the ground on slopes.
Fixed light from inside houses showing on outdoor props such as trash can lids.
Car headlights no longer flicker or break up on bumpy roads, but that may cause other yet smaller issues, time will tell.
Added Polish AI translation (per user request and approval): then I fixed overlapping journal text and letters running into each other in handwritten notes, and corrected the Survivor mode title which displayed wrong in Polish.
Fixed Alt+Tab triggering the Back action and unintentionally re-equipping or storing the player’s item.
Known Issues
The game hangs on non-Steam-Deck Linux. I am still trying to figure out why this is happening, For now, the legacy version still works (but does not have the new Survivor Mode, unfortunately).
An update is now live with the following bug fixes from yesterday's players reports:
Fixed stale option highlights when returning from the Options menu.
Fixed settings description-panel flickering when clicking empty menu space.
Made save-selection arrows clickable with the mouse.
Fixed a progression restriction that could prevent exiting the truck after the crash.
Improved interaction-marker tracking on moving objects.
Added keyboard light controls: tap F to toggle the body light; hold F to equip or put away the flashlight.
Added a smooth body-light fade when equipping the flashlight.
Fixed body-light restoration indoors and allowed toggling it during ladder and fixed-object interactions.
Improved wolf ground alignment and enabled light-probe lighting on the standard wolf model.
Restored high-fall landing animation triggering while holding an item.
Repaired six confirmed road-mesh gaps and smoothed a shading seam near the crash.
Improved flying-leaf lighting and reduced oil-lamp brightness in Survivor mode.
Adjusted wood-stove shadow settings across affected scenes.
Improved cash-register selection and safe-dial highlights as their materials were broken.
Added shadow casting to the store garage panel and the frozen-house blue fill light to address light leakage.
Limited automatic Linux graphics recommendations to High, added GPU-snow capability checks, and constrained shadow-map sizes to hardware limits. Will need more logs to truly fix the hang on Linux because I can't reproduce it with my machines.
Added release-build startup diagnostics to help investigate the Linux menu hang.
That’s right, there’s a new update today! We know that some Mac and Linux players experienced issues with the last update and this is mostly what we improved here. However, we do not have access to a wide range of machines running on these operating systems, so if you encounter bugs, glitches, etc, please let us know in the forums or by email at [email protected].
FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS
That being said, here is a glimpse of what today’s patch brings:
- Linux: The black screen glitch in the main menu should be fixed
- Linux: The mouse should now appear and work correctly in the main menu
- Mac: Bloom and Depth of field are now disabled by default as we are working on fixing compatibility issues with both effects (can be enabled if you have no issues with these options)
- Shader quality can now only be set at “high” if your graphic cards supports DirectX 11+
- Fixed the ice spike attack bug when encountering ice wolves on the snowmobile, which would sometimes make the game crash
- Most random crashes (when loading a game, for instance) have been fixed
- Other minor bug fixes and optimizations
UPCOMING CHANGES & KNOWN ISSUES
And here’s a short list of known issues and changes to come:
- Linux: the name of the region you are visiting doesn’t show on the screen when you arrive
- Linux: some may still encounter the black screen glitch and/or the mouse not working bugs in the main menu. If this is the case, please let us know, there is a work-around fix and we will make a sticky post in the forums
- Mac: Bloom and Depth of field disabled by default should fix most of the graphical glitches encountered in the last update. However, if you encounter similar glitches while these options are disabled, please let us know and we will fix them as soon as possible
- Random crashes: we were able to fix most of them, but there may be some that we might have missed. As usual, we will work on fixing them as soon as you report/we notice them
- We will add Russian language for subtitles, texts and menus
- We will add an option to enable/disable quick loading screens between areas
- More optimizations and bug fixes, as always ;)

An update for Kona has just been released!
FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS
Here’s a list of bug fixes and improvements that come with the patch:
- We removed two loading screens (on bridges, when leaving the General Store area)
- You can now delete photos (by clicking on a picture, a small window will open and let you choose)
- Mouse smoothing option has been added in the controls options
- In the same option menu, we also added an option to enable/disable autosaves
- We fixed unresponsive mouse and trackpad clicks in menus (when you have a touch screen)
- The yellow arrow in the middle of radial menus is now aligned accordingly
- We fixed a screen resolution display issue for Mac and Linux, which always showed the same resolution. This prevented players who changed it of bringing it back to its default value
- The first journal entry of “The Hunt” is now triggered automatically when approaching the first crossbow bolt instead of direct interaction
- We fixed a rare bug in which the player would complete the game in daylight when loading a checkpoint at a specific moment and location.
- We fixed a rare bug that would let the combat music continue at the end instead of changing for the end credits song.
- We fixed the invisible mouse cursor on Linux
- Many textures and collision fixes
- Other minor bug fixes and optimizations
Also, we updated Unity 3D engine (version 5.6) and here are some important notes about how it affects the game:
- Graphics settings will be reset to their default value. Before playing, make sure to set them back to your own preferences
- If you own a computer with a not-so-powerful CPU, but with a good GPU, the game should run better than before
- Some visual effects and materials have changed a little (they were not compatible with the new version of Unity)
- Cloths have been temporarily deactivated due to unusual crashes. Most have been replaced with animations, others will be fixed in the next patch
UPCOMING CHANGES & KNOWN ISSUES
And here’s a short list of what to expect in the next months:
- We will add Russian language for texts, interface and subtitles
- We will add an option to enable/disable quick loading screens between areas
- More optimizations and bug fixes, as always ;)

Thanks again for taking the time to send us feedback! The final release is coming soon and we really appreciate you helping us making the final version better!
Have a nice weekend!
EDIT: Added a UI known issue.
A few weeks have passed since our last update, so it’s time for a new one! Following your feedback in the forums, we added the version number in the top-right corner of the main screen and we fixed a few bugs.
Also, some of you experienced motion sickness while playing Kona. It usually goes away after a while or by changing some graphics options. However, someone suggested to add an option for a crosshair that could probably help a little. So we did! It is available in the controls options menu.
This week, we also introduce our new interaction system. I will avoid spoilers and if you write comments that include spoilers, please use the Spoiler formatting.
Interactors
Most of the feedback we receive is about our user interface. We’ve decided to change all interactors to make things clearer. Here’s a preview of what it looks like:
http://i.imgur.com/zjgxEy7.jpg
From now on, every interactor you will see will be a little square (see image). When you approach, the square will turn a little and you will be able to interact with the object. If you don’t know what action it might trigger, you will see a brief description or a small image of what the interactor does after a few seconds.
No More Combine Menu
http://i.imgur.com/jHiJc0P.jpg
We decided to remove the combine menu. Instead, when you have all required items, you will need to hold the interaction key (usually the E key or the A button on a controller) until the bar is full. Since our game doesn’t really focus on crafting, why not find a simpler way to do so!
Known issues
Here are some of the known issues that we are already working on fixing:
- The mouse scroll for texts works now. However, some the W and S buttons don’t work in all of them;
- When you have the lantern equiped (and sometimes with the flashlight) and you smoke a cigarette, the lantern is still in your hands until the end of the animation.
So that’s it! And if you’re in L.A., come say hi at the IndieCade @ E3 Showcase!
Cheers!
Today's update will feature many bug fixes and a significant framerate optimization. You may stumble upon some detail pop-in, but those should be smoothed out in the near future. We designed everything to get the best compromise between quality and performance at a level of detail setting of 3, and the new graphics quality presets start from there.
Other important stuff we added:
- A wild river appeared!
- Adjustements to the stress mechanic
And those known issues remain:
- Big "hangs" in loading scenes
- You may need to start a new game to access all journal features
Enjoy! Thanks again for all the feedback!
