About the Game
Overview
The original design of the never-before seen point and click adventure is being brought to life after 30+ years in the vault - Beyond Shadowgate! This new PC game has been created by the designers of the original 8-bit hit Shadowgate and a leading 8-bit adventure studio!
With a world that is over five times larger than Shadowgate, Beyond Shadowgate captures the same look and feel as the 8-bit console version while including modern design sensibilities. Since the memory and color palette limitations are removed, Beyond Shadowgate is a much longer and vibrant game, with both retro and modern gameplay mechanics that give you the feel of the original! For players accustomed to the NES 8-bit version, the game features XInput controller support. The adventure is also completely playable by mouse and key binds.

Story
35 years have passed since Jair defeated the Warlock Lord in the caverns beneath the living castle, Shadowgate. In that time, the land of Kal Torlin prospered and the events of Shadowgate were forgotten. But once again evil is stirring, scheming to bring the world to ruin.
In the dungeons of Gwynenthell, the capital city of Kal Torlin, a lowly Fenling by the name of Del Thornburrow awaits his fate. No stranger to a jail cell, Del soon frees himself from the dangers of the dungeon, only to begin a journey that will push him to the edge of his limits.
Lead Del as he travels through Gwynenthell, across the Torlin Forest, over the Gatekeeper Mountains, and beyond! Uncover plots to overthrow kingdoms that threaten to plunge the land into darkness! Interact with old friends and new, while protecting Del from the traps, hazards, monsters, and every other peril that may introduce him to the ever-present Grim Reaper.

More Fixes & Speedrun Features!
With V1.0.0.5 we have some new fixes and some special features for the most dedicated of speedrunners!
Progression Fixes
- Fixed an issue where an item could be picked up infinitely. The Dragon Tears item atop the castle tower -- this was only happening when using a controller.
- Fixed some minor visual glitches that would occur if the player used an item to kill themselves. We know the visions of Discitea Mort can drive you mad!
- Minor text updates throughout (some typos and some clarity on some events).
- One example:Updated the text at the slime monster in Shadowgate to explain why you need that scrap of paper before the spell works.
- Updated fixes to better handle events where the player dies unexpectedly.
Secret Special Settings Menu
Added a secret menu with a couple of features for players who are doing multiple playthroughs.
Unlocking the Special Menu
You must have completed the game once (any ending) to unlock the Special Menu. You'll have to be patient on the Main Menu while keeping an eye out for an old friend. Click on them to unlock the Special Menu!
Hold To Skip Text
Turning this function on will allow you to hold down the button (Mouse Left or 'A' on an Xbox Controller) to progress through text pages and dismiss them. This is intended to alleviate the hundreds and hundreds of frantic clicks needed to get through the game.
In-Game Timer
Turning this setting on will show an in-game timer at the bottom of the screen. It will show you exactly when the in-game timer is ticking.
These settings have been added to a special menu that requires completing the game because they do alter things away from the intended experience.
After unlocking the Special Menu, you can catch a glimpse of an old pal if you stick around.

- CH11: updated the memories of the twelve puzzle to be slightly less punishing when using spells. The puzzle is not easier, it just reduces the amount of unfair fail conditions
- Updated mouse scroll wheel to quick select actions

Update for Gamepad Support
Due to the way that the game handles gamepad support, there are rare cases where a USB or Bluetooth device that is not a controller would be identified as a controller and leave the game in an unplayable state.
An update has been made to include a message on launch that lets the player know that a Gamepad has been discovered and the game will launch in Controller Mode. At this time, the player can choose to opt out and continue in Mouse Mode.
If your settings are set to only allow Mouse and Keyboard, then this message will be skipped and you will launch into the game immediately.
Updates for Puzzles
Very minor updates have been made to smooth out and improve the user experience for some puzzles.
Some examples include:
- Chapter2: The SECRET BOOK can be LOOKed at in your inventory instead of requiring OPEN to turn it into the EVIDENCE (OPEN will still work as well)
- Chapter 3: The HEAVY CAGE can be used on the bridge lever at any time
- Chapter 4: The dirt patch at the base of the portal has been made more obvious
Minor Updates
- Updates to sound effects throughout
- Minor typo fixes
- Added a message to the game summary screen that lets the player know that Developer Commentary has been unlocked
