About the Game
Return to planet 4546B
Submerge yourself in an all-new, sub-zero expedition in an arctic region of Planet 4546B. Arriving with little more than your wits and some survival equipment, you set out to investigate what happened to your sister...
Uncover the truth
Alterra left in a hurry after a mysterious incident. Abandoned research stations dot the region. What happened to the scientists who lived and worked here? Logs, items, and databanks scattered among the debris paint a new picture of the incident. With limited resources, you must improvise to survive on your own.
Discover uncharted biomes
Swim beneath the blue-lit, arching expanses of Twisty Bridges. Become mesmerized by the glittering, mammoth crystals of the Crystal Caverns. Clamber up snow covered peaks and venture into the icy caves of Glacial Basin. Maneuver between erupting Thermal Vents to discover ancient alien artifacts. Below Zero presents entirely new environments for you to survive, study, and explore.
Construct habitats and vehicles
Survive the harsh climate by constructing extensive habitats, scavenging for resources, and crafting equipment. Blast across the snowy tundra on a Snowfox hoverbike. Cruise through enchanting and perilous biomes in your modular Seatruck.
Research alien lifeforms
Something undiscovered lurks around every corner. Swim through the giant Titan Holefish, encounter the haunting Shadow Leviathan, and visit the adorable Pengwings. Keep your wits about you. Not all creatures in this strange world are friendly.
Survive the chilly temperatures
Jump in, the water’s warm. The below zero temperatures of this arctic region pose a new threat. New weather conditions blanket above-ground habitats. Craft a toasty cold suit, sip on piping hot coffee, and warm up next to Thermal Lilies to stave off the chill.
An ocean of intrigue
What really happened to your sister? Who were the aliens who came here before? Why were they on this planet? Can we find solace from grief in truth? Below Zero extends the story of the Subnautica universe, diving deep into the mystery introduced in the original game.
About the development team
Below Zero is created by Unknown Worlds, a small studio that traces its roots back to the 2002 Half-Life mod Natural Selection. It is the same studio that created the original Subnautica. The team is scattered around the globe, from the United States to the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Austria, Australia, Canada, and many more places.

Official update history
We have released a hotfix today that addresses a security-related concern raised to us by Unity. You can read more about the specific issue here: https://unity.com/security/sept-2025-01/
While the update patches out the flaw, Unity has said that, to their knowledge, no one has exploited the issue to date, and no players have been at risk.
To help ensure that this security flaw can never be exploited on Subnautica or Below Zero, we have updated Unity following the guidelines provided. We have also had to make the difficult decision to disable all legacy and alternative branches of Subnautica and Below Zero, as there is no way for us to patch out the security issue on each of those branches individually.
If you play Subnautica or Below Zero with any mods on our legacy or alternative branches, you should disable or remove them before launching the game after the update to preserve your save files. You will need to check that the mods you want to play are updated to work with the most recent version of the game.
For our speedrunning community, this also means that the speedrunners branch has been disabled. We understand that this will affect speedruns moving forward, but the security and safety of all our players is our highest priority.
Thank you for all your continued support for Subnautica and Below Zero!
Keep Diving.
We’ve just released a brand new patch full of bug fixes and improvements for Below Zero!
This update will roll out worldwide and might take some time to appear across the globe.
PC & Console
Added a pop-up newsfeed that can be used for one-time-only announcements.
Fixed a rare bug that would stop the game world from streaming in and make the game unresponsive when attempting to save in some cases.
Fixed the Ice Worm always damaging the Vehicle/Snowfox/Player from any distance.
Changed the chance of knocking the player off of the Snowfox when taking damage from the Ice Worm from 100% to 25% to make the encounter less frustrating..
Changed the Snowfox's collider to make it less annoying to drive by, greatly reducing the amount it can get stuck on obstacles and props.
Changed the orientation of the Snowfox when deployed to now properly face the same direction as the player to make it easier to mount in a hurry.
Changed the Snowfox's damage from terrain impact from 100% to 12%, to not need as many repairs from just driving.
Fixed when the Ice Worm pushed the Snowfox it would only trigger a cooldown to the physical push but not damage and knock off.
Fixed the Snowfox occasionally falling inside the terrain and disappearing forever when deploying it.
Fixed the "lightning flashes" accessibility option preventing the Repair Tool from using power when it was unchecked.
Changed the main menu on all platforms by removing the merchandise store banner.
Fixed the texture filter quality to use Bilinear for some sprites on the Blueprints PDA tab.
PC only (excluding Windows Store)
Fixed gamepad selection indicator being visible after switching from gamepad to keyboard and mouse.
We’ve released the Teeny-Tiny Hotfix - a patch to resolve a few bugs from our last update What the Dock. Fixes:
- Ambient water particles are now showing correctly
- Fix to allow new screenshots can be cycled through after deleting older screenshots again
Thank you to everyone who reported bugs to us. As always, keep in touch and let us know if you have any persisting issues!
- Unknown Worlds
This update also includes a fix for endgame dialogue in Sam's storyline, and some minor bug fixes related to translation and text sizing.
Finally, if you use console commands on PC, they're now even easier to access by using shift+enter!
As you may be aware, we were excited to introduce Steam Cloud save capability with the final Early Access update for Below Zero, Seaworthy.
We have heard all of your feedback about how Steam Cloud saves have been working for Below Zero and have made the difficult decision to disable the feature.
With Steam Cloud saves enabled for the last several weeks, we can say definitively that it's not quite ready for prime time. For us, this boils down to two factors: speed and reliability. Steam Cloud saves are currently taking too long for some players, and we have also received a few concerning reports of saves disappearing. The latter seems exceptionally rare but where saves are concerned, we feel that it is better to err on the side of caution.
There should be no impact to your existing saves. They should remain locally on your computer and you can load them as normal.
Should you need to access your save games on another computer, you will need to transfer your saves manually. You can find your saved games in the SubnauticaZero\SNAppData\SavedGames\ folder, or by going into the game properties on Steam and browsing Local Files. (The drive Below Zero is located on will differ depending on where you chose to store the game.)
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34382505/bf08ae61162f5c7e522a168029bad7e6d5015f60.jpg
We'd like to support Steam Cloud saves moving forward (it's something we want as players as well!) but will do so with a more robust implementation. We can definitely say it won't be ready in time for our May 14 launch but we are considering this a priority.
Thank you again for all of your support and feedback.
Happy diving!

Steam Cloud Saves FAQ
What happens to my saves?
There should be no impact to your existing saves. Only that you’ll need to transfer them manually if you want to move them between computers. We have been assured that even existing saves in the “cloud” will be unaffected.
Help! My save files are gone!
Send us an email at [email protected]. We probably can’t recover them, but we would love to work with you to learn what happened and help other players.
Can I download my saves that were stored in the cloud if I deleted them locally?
No. Well, not at the moment. Any save that is in the cloud should be preserved until we turn Steam Cloud saves back on. But you will not be able to access them until that time. They are both there and not there. Schrodinger’s saves.
Aw man, I love cloud saves!
Us too, we’re definitely bringing them back! We need a little extra time to perfect it first.
What are Steam Cloud saves?

As part of Below Zero’s journey through Early Access, there is an Experimental beta available on Steam for fans to play. It allows players to immediately get their hands on new biomes, tools, and creatures as soon as they are added to the game.
However, it is not without its risks. In fact, we are anticipating that an impending merge to Experimental might exhibit some of the below risks!
If you’ve opted to play Below Zero in Experimental, there are a few essential things that you need to know:
- Here, there be monsters. And no, we’re not talking about Chelicerate or Squidshark. Experimental means that you’re playing Below Zero with near-daily updates. But that also means daily bugs. The kind that span from minor inconveniences to save file breaking. Which brings us to…
- Don’t get attached to your save files. In fact, if you’re concerned about save files, we recommend avoiding Experimental all together. If you’re looking to pour hours into perfecting your base, and exploring, collecting and crafting everything available, then opting out of beta is for you. In some cases, Experimental can and will corrupt your save files.
- Your feedback is invaluable. Elements of Below Zero Experimental will break in some of the weirdest ways, and we rely on your help to pin-point and work on fixing them. We’ve even built a feedback tool directly into the game, so if you spot anything, go ahead and hit F8 and let us know what you’ve found!
If you are playing Below Zero on Experimental with a save file you want to protect, we recommend the following:
- Do not open your Below Zero save file while in Experimental.
- Wait until the next Early Access update.
- Switch to ‘NONE - Opt out of all beta programs’ and allow latest update to download.
- Open save file from step one and don’t revert back to Experimental.
In the meantime, you can catch up to your progress points on a new file using Console Commands. The Below Zero Wiki is up to date with all of the current commands, and you can quickly find yourself where you last left off.
As always, we’d like to thank you for all of your support as Below Zero continues to move towards Content Complete. We couldn’t do this without you!

A small update has been released! This update is not a major feature release. It contains some bug fixes and improvements, and tries to fix some (but not all!) of the issues your feedback revealed after Below Zero release.
This update also serves to test our new triple-store build deployment system. This system sends the update to each of the Epic, Discord, and Steam stores at the same time. We want to make sure it is working properly before we release a major feature update.
To be notified as soon as we do release our first major feature update, subscribe to the Subnautica development newsletter, follow @Subnautica on Twitter, @Subnautica on Instagram, Subnautica on Facebook, and subscribe to Subnautica on Youtube.
Please keep sending us your feedback! We'd love to hear from you in the in-game feedback system (press F8 while playing), on our forums, or in our Discord chat. Below Zero is still full of bugs, but with your continued feedback we will whittle them away during Early Access.
