About the Game

Overview / What Is TaleSpire?
TaleSpire is a beautiful way to play pen and paper RPGs online. Bring your stories to life and embark upon campaigns together with your friends, regardless of where you are in the world.
With Talespire, the beauty and physicality of tabletop gaming meet the endless possibilities of a digital world. Here you can collaboratively build your worlds without compromising the handcrafted aesthetic of using traditional miniatures.
As a player, you can take on the mantle of multiple heroes and creatures, manage your stats, and express yourself using the growing emote system. Perform dice rolls directly on the board and interact with your environment — at least, as far as your GM will let you!
As a GM, you can dazzle and thrill your friends by building expansive maps, setting up shots, and controlling immersive soundscapes to bring all your delightful and devious designs to life.
TaleSpire is not tied to a specific game or ruleset. Whether you’re running a one-shot or a sprawling campaign, if it's on a square grid then we have your back. We are now in Early Access, so now is your chance to raise up your sword, rally your friends, and take your next adventure online with us.
Building and play are one
Setting the stage for your story takes no time at all with Talespire, but even if you forget to prep, it can all be added in while you play. Want to destroy a wall to reveal a secret passage? Do it! Want to rain down piles of gold from the heavens? You have the power. At any moment during your adventure, you (or multiple GMs) can jump into building mode and change the world without interrupting anything else. Our persistent online boards can be created at a moment’s notice, and everything is synchronized in real-time as you dice-roll your way to glory.
A slew of tools to help you on your adventures
It’s dangerous to go alone, but luckily we have a bunch of tools that can help, and all are as pleasing as they are useful. Beautiful dice, rulers and area markers, a range of emotes, and special modes for turn-based combat and cinematic sequences are at your disposal.
A growing library of assets
Pick from a plethora of pieces to create your scenes! The current roster stands at 280 miniatures, 2100 tiles and props, and 60 unique audio tracks. Our library is ever-expanding; we produce fresh asset packs every month.
Share your creations
TaleSpire boards are designed to be easily shared, whether with friends or with the wider community on sites like TalesBazaar or TalesTavern. You can copy sections of your boards (slabs) and paste them as text outside of TaleSpire. Simply paste the text back into TaleSpire to summon the slab to your hand.
This tale has only just begun
Being in Early Access we still have plenty of adventures ahead of us. We have an active Discord community, which you can find in the social section, and alongside your feedback we’re looking forward to developing the game’s features. So come, journey with us a while.

p.s. The bimonthly banter is happening this Friday, June 19th at 20:00 UTC for TaleSpire updates, live Q&A, and more with the team. Come hang out at [dynamiclink href="https://www.twitch.tv/bouncyrock"]
Today we have a small-yet-large feature for you:
We have completely overhauled the tags for our creatures according to our new tag system to be more predictable and consistent across the entire library. While this changes very little in the TaleSpire code, it required a lot of tooling changes in our asset creation process which have now concluded.
This is step 2 of our aforementioned tagging overhaul plans, but let's recap it quickly:
New search UI and logic enabling multiple tag suggestions, live search and fuzzy name search (Done)
Update tags for all our creatures to reflect the new system (This release)
Provide the tools to community mini creators to add tags to their minis in TaleWeaverLite (Upcoming)
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36943214/43395eeb9738e78c282ea219a2c454ab584f695d.gif"]
With this released you'll now be able to filter for many more properties of minis much more reliably: Whether you're searching for a humanoid spellcaster, a ranged warrior to populate a city wall with or hellish monsters to throw at your players in a dungeon, you're able to query for that and have confidence that you'll see all we have to offer for those situations.

This patch fixes a recent bug that resulted in un-saved changes not being saved on exit.
The next code release coming is a fix to hide-volumes not being hidden by the hide plane.
Back soon!
This is a very behind-the-scenes fix!
We have code that keeps an eye out for when local community content is added, edited, or removed. The library we were using for this was doing the job correctly, but in a rather wasteful way. In this release, we have replaced it with our own code, and it's much zippier now.
We are noticing far fewer frame stutters in simple cases and better 1% lows in general.
How noticeable this will be depends on your setup and the makeup of the board you are on.
Even if it's subtle, it's one more very necessary step on the journey to v1. Every bit of performance we can save here is performance we can now spend on chonkier systems like fog-of-war.
Back soon with more!
The Beta has ended, the era of live-search has begun!
Up until now, you could view things in the library and filter them by their tags. The search box allowed you to find tags, and the view would change only when you added or removed a tag.
Today, the search has gained new powers!
It searches your entire library based on the name of the tile, prop, or creature. And it does it live, as you type, so you see the best current matches.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36943214/60e0892e5bb3363a74fd58c12961296aa501cb31.gif"]
Search is “fuzzy”, so spelling mistakes are allowed, and tags remain the powerful tool they always were, allowing you to filter things more precisely.
This is the first major milestone in improving the libraries you use in TaleSpire. To quickly recap the plan:
Today’s release. This brings:
Live-search with fuzzy name matching (including downloaded community content)
New UI to show asset names in the library
Multiple tag suggestions while entering text instead of just one.
Even more non-search stuff listed later in this post.
The next release in this chain will be the new creature tags. We’ve reworked and retagged all the creatures to make finding things with tags much more predictable and reliable.
THEN. At long last. We will ship the new build of TaleWeaverLite, which will allow all modders to add tags to their own creations.
Bonus step: we’ll be working with the community to help tag the wild sea of minitures that are already out there.
Of course, we are working on other features at the same time. So you’ll be seeing other things ship during this process.
Back to this release. We also have:
Massively improved memory and CPU usage when browsing community assets in the library (no more lag!)
Improved the performance of common collision ray cast
Improved physics performance for large boards\ - Performance improvements to the grid-based browsers
Fixed mod.io plugin cache - Replaced a lot of managed-memory allocations. Part of a longer-term effort to reduce pressure on GC
Assorted fixes and supporting code for upcoming releases
We are delighted to be getting this out to you all and hope it makes building that little bit nicer.
See you in the next release!
\: The physics perf change may not be so visible. While it does give a noticeable reduction in CPU processing time, the rendering time for larger boards still dominates frame time. We have more coming down the line in this department. Keep an eye on the dev-log.

Do your fans try to escape your machine when running TaleSpire? If so, this patch might be for you!
We have a fix for a long-standing threading issue that has been causing CPU usage on some machines to be noticeably higher than would otherwise make sense.
Here are some very rough observations that we’ve made:
WARNING: We are not set up for rigorous benchmarking, nor do we have the deep knowledge required to do a good job. Take these results as a rumor!
On the Steam Deck, we saw a 7 °C drop in CPU temperature, a ~1000 RPM drop in fan speed, much more stable frame timings, AND all with slightly higher FPS.
On an x86 tablet/laptop convertible with a Ryzen 8840U SoC, running TaleSpire with frame-rate limited to 30fps, we saw an approximately 20% SoC power consumption drop compared to the same setup on our previous release.
And with a 16-Core AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, you could straight up hear that the fans were not being thrashed so hard!
You can see some more hand-wavy findings below the version of this post on our dev-log
Of course, this patch doesn’t fix all the perf issues. We’ve got a lot more in the pipeline that should make TaleSpire even more accessible to our friends on lower-end machines. Which means more folks who can join the fray!
Until next time, we wish you all good CPU temps, and a good week.
