About the Game

Overview / What Is TaleSpire?
TaleSpire is a beautiful way to play pen and paper RPGs online. Bring your stories to life and embark upon campaigns together with your friends, regardless of where you are in the world.
With Talespire, the beauty and physicality of tabletop gaming meet the endless possibilities of a digital world. Here you can collaboratively build your worlds without compromising the handcrafted aesthetic of using traditional miniatures.
As a player, you can take on the mantle of multiple heroes and creatures, manage your stats, and express yourself using the growing emote system. Perform dice rolls directly on the board and interact with your environment — at least, as far as your GM will let you!
As a GM, you can dazzle and thrill your friends by building expansive maps, setting up shots, and controlling immersive soundscapes to bring all your delightful and devious designs to life.
TaleSpire is not tied to a specific game or ruleset. Whether you’re running a one-shot or a sprawling campaign, if it's on a square grid then we have your back. We are now in Early Access, so now is your chance to raise up your sword, rally your friends, and take your next adventure online with us.
Building and play are one
Setting the stage for your story takes no time at all with Talespire, but even if you forget to prep, it can all be added in while you play. Want to destroy a wall to reveal a secret passage? Do it! Want to rain down piles of gold from the heavens? You have the power. At any moment during your adventure, you (or multiple GMs) can jump into building mode and change the world without interrupting anything else. Our persistent online boards can be created at a moment’s notice, and everything is synchronized in real-time as you dice-roll your way to glory.
A slew of tools to help you on your adventures
It’s dangerous to go alone, but luckily we have a bunch of tools that can help, and all are as pleasing as they are useful. Beautiful dice, rulers and area markers, a range of emotes, and special modes for turn-based combat and cinematic sequences are at your disposal.
A growing library of assets
Pick from a plethora of pieces to create your scenes! The current roster stands at 280 miniatures, 2100 tiles and props, and 60 unique audio tracks. Our library is ever-expanding; we produce fresh asset packs every month.
Share your creations
TaleSpire boards are designed to be easily shared, whether with friends or with the wider community on sites like TalesBazaar or TalesTavern. You can copy sections of your boards (slabs) and paste them as text outside of TaleSpire. Simply paste the text back into TaleSpire to summon the slab to your hand.
This tale has only just begun
Being in Early Access we still have plenty of adventures ahead of us. We have an active Discord community, which you can find in the social section, and alongside your feedback we’re looking forward to developing the game’s features. So come, journey with us a while.

Official update history
This is another beta improving things behind the scenes. The technical details are that this beta improves how we build batches of stuff for the GPU to draw, and also how we run the physics. It has the potential to significantly speed up the time physics takes to run (I saw a 40% reduction in some tests). Still, it's likely you will not see an FPS improvement yet:
The improvements are situation-dependent. Size of board, number of creatures, number of dice, and the relative gpu/cpu specs can change the timing in ways that are not easily inferred from FPS.
Rendering time still dominates. Imagine you are driving to a neighboring country, but you ran really fast from your house to your car. You could get to your car 80% faster, but the driving time is likely to dominate the total time of the trip :P
The very good news is that these changes were an incredibly necessary step towards using your cores more efficiently. As rendering time drops (in future releases), these wins will stack. With this done, I can finally tackle some architectural things that were completely infeasible before.
How to get involved

Duration of the Beta
If all goes well, this will be released to the community early next week.
Thank you!
Big thanks to anyone considering checking this out. It's not a very visually exciting release, but it's a very necessary step towards running well on more machines.See you in the next post!
Iiiit's patch time again. Today we have:
Fixed a case where custom tags could clash with synonyms, degrading search.
Fixed the slab-uploader so that, by default, slabs can be added to collections again.
If you are on Windows or Linux, it is a BIG download as we tweaked some asset build settings for behind-the-scenes reasons. The assets should look and behave the same otherwise.
Onward!
We received reports that, more recently, TaleSpire had been taking ages to start. We tracked it down to a case where, on Windows, having mapped network drives triggered daft behavior in a library we rely on.
We have worked around that and are happy to get this to you. Of course, if startup is still slow, please let us know at http://feedback.talespire.com as we want to fix that for you.
More things are on their way. See you in the next release.
This release is just preparation for more tooling.
This might not normally be worth mentioning, but as we are here, I can tell you about the next fix.
If you have mapped network drives, TaleSpire can randomly take a really long time to start. We have a fix for this coming as soon as it gets through testing. Thanks to those who reported it, and sorry it took a bit to sus out.
Anyhoo, I'm back off to the coding mines. See you in the next patch.
This is a tiny patch to fix the fact that tags from community assets were not being loaded into the tag database. This meant that those creatures were not searchable by tag.
Back soon with more!
In this patch, we fix a bug in the vision-limit system where a GM connecting to a board won't see anything if they are not the first person in the board.
Thanks to those who reported this one; it evaded us for quite a while.
We're running another Beta as this touches a lot of places in the code base. Status Effects also have a lot of moving parts, so some vigorous testing is in order! If you'd like to check it out, find instructions here:
https://talespire.com/welcome-to-the-status-effect-beta
What are Status Effects?
These have been requested by the community since we went into Early Access. They're ways to keep track of different conditions on a creature such as these:
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36943214/d0e1476bea0239b32c6458b3f2de9dcbc7547282.gif"]
They can be toggled on and off by anyone who can control said creature. Hopefully these will now give some visual queues of what might be the matter with your Character.
I hope as many people as possible check out the beta. As mentioned in the instructions. This beta is running on a Temporary server, which means that none of your Campaigns or boards will transfer over. Slabs still works, but importing boards will not. Everything created on the Temporary Server will perish once the beta period is over. (Slabs still works fine)
Thanks everyone!
Some hide-volume tweaks have now left Beta.
The visible changes are:
Hide volumes now respond to the hide plane
If the camera gets too close to a hide-volume, the volume can hide.

We'll be back very soon with more!

p.s. The bimonthly banter is happening this Friday, June 19th at 20:00 UTC for TaleSpire updates, live Q&A, and more with the team. Come hang out at [dynamiclink href="https://www.twitch.tv/bouncyrock"]
It's time for another Beta! For all details and instructions on how to join the Beta, see: https://talespire.com/welcome-to-the-hide-tweak-beta

Behind the scenes, the way hide-volumes are represented and rendered has changed. Unofficial modders will want to kick the tires of anything that hooks into that system.
The Beta is expected to run for a week before it gets merged into the live branch. Reports of bugs and other weirdnesses are very welcome.
See you next time!
