About the Game
Ship of Fools is a seafaring roguelite co-op game where you play the Fools, the only creatures fool enough to brave the sea. The Great Lighthouse that once protected the Archipelago is broken and a storm of malice and corruption is coming.
Together, you and your ship mate will jump aboard The Stormstrider and make your voyage across the sea. Man the cannons, ready your sails and protect your ship from sea monsters over multiple runs. It’s up to you to defend your home from the almighty Aquapocalypse.
In a clamshell, Ship of Fools is a game about blasting away your seaborne foes with mighty cannons as you defend your ship. Inspired by modern classic roguelites and built for co-op, you’ll want to bring your first mate on deck and enjoy oarsome combat as you unlock new trinkets and artifacts to help you save the world from catastrophe.

Designed for co-op play, frantic combat encounters with the horrifying creatures of the storm will test your teamwork. Work together to defend and repair the ship, combine item effects in powerful combos and make sure you have your shipmate’s back if you don’t want to become fish food.

Uncover lost treasures and remote shops on the islands of the Archipelago, but plan your moves carefully! As you chart your way through the sector, the Everlasting Storm shifts and changes, blocking your paths with its fury. You’ll need to adjust your course in reaction to storm movements and decide when you can brave a trip to discover what lurks inside the storm.

Man your ship as a solo sailor and fight your way through dangerous waters and keep the glory for yourself, Ship of Fools offers solo play as well as multiplayer. As they sing in old sailor songs: it’s sometimes better to have no crew than a dysfunctional one!

With many Fools to play with, unique items to find and unlock, combat encounters to fight in and many islands to visit, each run will bring something new to your voyage. Bolster your strength each time, ready to defeat the monsters of the deep sea.

Steam Patch Notes
Official update history
Bug fixes
Fixed an issue where the Tentacles boss could continue an anticipated tentacle attack while its head was emerging, potentially hitting the boat and causing an unavoidable hit.
Fixed a bug where certain UI elements did not invert properly on the end run screen in inverted mode.
Miscellaneous
An overall optimization pass has been applied to the game's projectiles, leading to better performance when firing cannons (laggy oil and electric effects, we banish thee!).
Fixed a typo in one of Alphy’s dialogues.
Fixed a typo in "The Piranha Plushie" description in German (thanks to SvenL for reporting this issue to us on Discord).
Fixed a typo in "The Clock" name in German (thanks to SvenL for reporting this issue to us on Discord).
Fixed a typo in one of Horacles Jr.'s dialogues (thanks to Sands Under Table for reporting this issue to us on Discord).
Trading card items
Ship of Fools now features Steam trading cards! Collect the full set to gain beautiful badges, emotes, and Steam profile backgrounds to show everyone you’re a true Fool.
Bug fixes
Fixed an issue where players using Simplified or Traditional Chinese would be reset to English upon restarting the game. Clearly not the intended behavior! (thanks to Shroom_香菇 for reporting this issue to us on Discord)
Miscellaneous
Update sub menu title label to reduce confusion. In the "Play" menu where you select to play online or local, we've renamed "New Run" back to simply "Play" in every language.
Fix typos in "The Dark Chest" description (thanks to Wrecked... for reporting this issue to us on the Steam Forums).
Bug fixes
- Fix issue causing a cutscene soft-lock when Barnaby and Alphy were unlocked at the same time when returning to The Great Lighthouse after a run (thanks to TheUnBearable and Matan for reporting this issue to us on Discord).
- Add a missing pew pew mode sound during Claws, Tyrant of The Deep boss fight. The missing sound goes like this: *CHAK CHAK* (but it sounds better in-game than by text).
- Tentatively fix the "ghost" enemy bug in online multiplayer, where enemies appeared invincible to the client and stayed on screen for the rest of the run. Please report on Discord if the issue persists!
Miscellaneous
- Update main menu button labels to reduce confusion. With the recent addition of the run progression save feature, we introduced a new "Continue" button that lets players resume an unfinished run. Previously, the buttons were labeled "Resume Run" and "New Run", which led some players to believe "New Run" would reset their save file. To address this, we've renamed "New Run" back to simply "Play" in every language.
- Adjust translations in other languages for the "Resume Run" button text.
- Fix typos in new dialogues texts.
- Lower the popshell explosion volume in pewpew mode.
Alphy's project begins
Just like other major island dwellers, Alphy and Pelly are first found stranded on a raft in the middle of the sea… but this time, reaching them won’t be so easy.
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/b75e1b469cc3c95383ec9dbef35d84cf9a8607a3.gif
To find them, you’ll need to dust off the trusty Stormstrider with the Beacon unlocked and head into the Darkness. Only then will you have a shot at rescuing these new (and very handy) allies.
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/a5720f697516b9364bef69a60f6e8bc42df266b4.gif
Once rescued, you’ll start seeing Alphy and Pelly on the islands you visit during runs. Hand them extra items and resources you don't need, and they’ll use them as materials to rebuild the many structures of the Great Lighthouse—your new and improved starting hub!
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/f686b25f265882b8da59619a4520c1da98680456.gif
While Alphy is busy with construction, Pelly is laying eggs of the most unconventional properties that can alter reality itself.

Pew Pew Mode is real!!
Pelly’s first-ever egg, the Pew Pew Egg, does something truly unhinged:
It replaces every. single. sound effect. in the game… With mouth-crafted masterpieces.
Yes, you heard that right. Over 400+ sound effects and 32 complete songs have been remade a cappella by our very own Ship of Fools dev team. What started as an April Fool’s joke in 2023 has now become a fully realized (and completely ridiculous) feature, thanks to the incredible talent of our composer, Philippe Grant, and the sheer foolishness of our team.
We're curious to find out what will be your new favourite pew pew mode remastered song!
Electric Effect
As Alphy and Pelly work on rebuilding your base, you’ll start receiving rewards from grateful inhabitants as a token of their appreciation.
For instance, once Rust’s Forge is fully restored, she’ll reward you with your very own gunsmith hammer, a new item called the Thunderclap (that will now be permanently added to your item pool). The Thunderclap introduces a brand-new elemental effect: the Electric Effect!
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/63c9fac199bbda2cd5b9a4d36de029c2e77b2c74.png
When an electric imbued projectile hits an enemy, it unleashes a burst of five electric bolts that have pierce and homing effects. Even better: these bolts inherit any effects currently active on the Fool who caused the electric effect to trigger—creating chaotic, chain-reactive moments of brilliance.
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/dd762278b7a70a5c8a4fcd0ae693efcd072475da.gif
Many more items and space-time altering eggs are yet to be discovered!
Four New Fools Join the Fray!
Alongside this free content update, 2 new Packs of Fools are released as DLC! The first pack is the Golden Bay Duo introducing Commodore Goldie and Hanha!
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/0201551510affeed97f2fce4c2d17be2f0b42992.jpg
Both these characters bring a new gameplay mechanic, allowing them to spend Sand Dollars to overcharge their reflect action, unleashing game-changing abilities!
Commodore Goldie – Flaunts its wealth with pride, yet hides a heart of gold
- A goldfish with a taste for riches, Goldie digs with her trusty shovel to uncover Whirl Pearls. (or, with a bit of luck, maybe something else?)
- On impact, these pearls create a Cash Vortex, scattering gold and wealth as they strike enemies!
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/dbd2d6c40cf9027bf870f57be3aeb48dbae7a2c1.gif
Hanha – Relentlessly tracks the weak, leaving no bounty unclaimed
- A fearsome bounty hunter, Hanha marks an enemy for the hunt.
- When a marked foe is defeated, they drop a Hunting Trophy into the water—trinkets that boost player stats!
- Each enemy has its own unique trophy, making every battle a high-stakes hunt! We will let you discover what each individual trinket does! Happy hunting!

Prepare to unleash shocking new strategies with The Thunder Tide Duo! This electrifying Pack of Fools introduces two eccentric new characters—mad scientists of high Aquademic renown who harness the power of static electricity to zap their foes into the bottomless abyss!
Both characters utilize a new gameplay mechanic that lets them roll to generate static charges. These charges build up and release into increasingly powerful electric effects!
Eelvis – Shock and Roll!
- An amped-up electric eel with a jolted stage presence.
- When he fires a cannon, he discharges all stored static energy, creating a devastating electric explosion on impact!

Mark your maps! Alphy’s Project Update launches on Steam on April 24th, 2025!
In this post, I’ll introduce you to some of the exciting new features coming your way, including four brand-new fools available as DLC!
Alphy’s project
Hold and behold Pelly and Alphy! The ultimate partners in crime (and construction)! These two have landed in the Archipelago with a grand mission: restoring every broken structure to its former glory!
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/8057c07367fca56d5b0d9aa9cba08f99dd673eed.png
Your job? Gather materials on your journey and bring them back to The Great Lighthouse Island so Alphy can unlock powerful new items and… well… Pelly?
Pelly, on the other hand, will be laying eggs—but not just any ordinary eggs! These eggs hold space-time-altering properties, adding an extra layer of foolishness to your adventure once incubating!
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/42083281/6d73b56ed19267f0bc056b2a7cc39d7e37626a4b.png
Each egg introduces a unique, togglable game modifier, because who doesn’t love absolute chaos? And here is the first one!
Pew Pew Mode
Pelly’s first-ever egg, the Pew Pew Egg, does something truly unhinged:
It replaces every. single. sound effect. in the game… With mouth-crafted masterpieces.
Yes, you heard that right. Over 400+ sound effects and 32 complete songs have been remade a cappella by our very own Ship of Fools dev team. What started as an April Fool’s joke in 2023 has now become a fully realized (and completely ridiculous) feature, thanks to the incredible talent of our composer, Philippe Grant, and the sheer foolishness of our team.
In case you’ve missed it back then, here was the original April Fools skit that started the idea for the pew pew mode:
Save your run, save the world
One of the most requested quality of life features is finally here!
With this update, you’ll finally be able to save your progress mid-adventure!
How does it work?
- Your progress auto-saves whenever you select a new encounter on the map.
- Next time you return, you can resume your adventure right where you left off!
- Want to switch things up? You can continue a solo run in co-op or even take an offline game online—your run stays intact and it works the other way around too!

Hey Fools! Developer Dan here, bringing you details about this new Ship of Fools update releasing the highly anticipated endless mode along with a plethora of balance adjustments and bug fixes.
Since the game's launch, the community has eagerly requested an endless mode, allowing a successful run to continue indefinitely. So we did it! From now on, upon winning any run, you'll have the option to embark on an Endless Mode adventure, retaining your current equipment and starting anew from The Forgotten Waters.
But beware! Each time you enter a new loop, enemies receive a substantial power boost. This added challenge compounds with the modifiers provided by The Lighthouse brightness levels.

Hold on a moment... Are we suggesting that it's now feasible to duplicate any item at the High Sea’s fountain on each loop? This would theoretically allow for an infinite number of identical trinkets to be equipped simultaneously, right?
YES.
Let the crazy builds go wild and shall the fun remain endless!
v1.4.0 patch notes
New features:
- Endless mode added
Balance changes:
- Reduce owlet movement speed when charging the boat before exploding
- Increase paper plane ammunition homing force and damage
Fools balance changes:
- Quill: Missing a shot only removes 2 stacks instead of all of them. Sentry gun not hitting enemies does not count as a miss. We felt that her ability was too punishing, making her almost unplayable in certain situations. Now Quill is a strong pick while still requiring some good aiming!
- Betty: Initiate rage mode when getting hit by a regular paddle attack from another player instead of only initiating from a heavy hit. This allows for the other player to continuously initiate Betty’s rage mode while she remains shooting!
- Finley: Rework reward pool from repairs. Now when repairing, Finley has a chance of spawning:
- Regular resource: 60%
- Basic chest: 25%
- Ancient chest containing an item: 5%
- Regular resource: 60%
- Jules: All light trinkets are now included in the pool of obtainable items from his ability. Jules will now generate a trinket when defeating The Eye of the Storm. Prior to this update, activating Jules' ability upon defeating the final boss was unnecessary. However, with the introduction of Endless mode, this item now serves a purpose in subsequent loops!
Miscellaneous:
- Prevent sentry cannons from shooting an enemy with an active deflection bubble
- Barnaby and Jules ability now remove the generated item from the pool of obtainable items to make sure those items are not generated again in the same run
- Replace Mama Gull inventory image
- Replace Yoyo trinket activation keyword from “damage” to “accuracy”
- Something special added to the main menu…
Bug Fixes:
- Fix plank bundle given by the siren in The Edge cave sometimes falling in the water
- Fix achievements for completing a run not being shared with the client in an online game
- Fix some special chest encounters ending too soon
- Fix siren ship misplaced hole making it hard to repair
- Fix enemies looping sound never stopped in certain situations
- Fix projectile attack ground target sometimes not being deactivated
