About the Game
The Walking Trade is a quirky, action-packed zombie apocalypse store management game where chaos and commerce collide!

Design your shop, balancing space, aesthetics, and functionality. Organize shelves, set prices, and ensure customers leave happy - or at least alive.

Customers aren’t your only problem - zombies invade! Wield melee weapons, firearms, or whatever you can find to defend your shop during raids and hordes.

Hire survivors to scavenge supplies, serve customers, or guard the shop. Keep them equipped and motivated to reap the rewards.

Unlock crafting stations to create weapons, tools, and shop upgrades. Build barricades, storage units, and even makeshift traps to keep zombies at bay.

Be a benevolent shopkeeper or an opportunistic overlord. Help the community, price gouge, or even sabotage settlements for profit. Your reputation determines who comes knocking.
In The Walking Trade, every decision shapes your survival. Build, fight, and thrive in the apocalypse—your way!

The Walking Trade - Hotfix Patch v1.1.6
Thank you all for the feedback on the latest update. Controller support is always a tricky one as there are so many layers to what can go wrong, from input drivers, engine compatibility before even reaching the game itself. I believe for returning players the new update had wiped some previous keybindings (ESC key being the biggest offender for some). For this update I am going to fully wipe and reset all previous keybinding data for mouse, keyboard and controllers. This should fix the issue for everyone. Any changed keybinds will need to be redone, so apologies there!
Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue causing the keybindings menu to hide after being used the first time.
Improvements
Added buttons for all currently connected controllers in the keybindings menu. These can be manually removed and assigned. This intends to help players diagnose why their input may not be being received correctly.
Extended the maximum number of connected controllers from 1 to 100. This should prevent other controllers from overriding your intended assigned controller. It will mean that all controllers will contribute input simultaneously, so removing controllers you are not using will fix this.
If you see any of these issues still around or new issues introduced please let me know asap! As mentioned before, input system updates can be tricky due to the variations of every player’s setup, so if this update makes the experience worse, please let me know in detail and I will try to fix things as fast as I can.
Thanks again,
Adam

The Walking Trade - Patch v1.1.5
Controller Support
The Walking Trade now officially supports controllers! You can freely switch between mouse and keyboard or controller at any time and the game’s interface will react accordingly. We support Xbox, PlayStation, Switch controllers and Steam Deck out the gate.
Aim Assist: When using a controller the game will use aim assist and some magnetism to help guide you to interactions and combat threats. By default, combat aim assist is turned on which will help aim both melee and projectile weapons based on the weapon’s range. This will only assist towards mobs that are considered a threat (zombies or customers attacking you). Interaction aim assist is disabled by default, but if you feel you are having trouble navigating small items in the world, this setting may help.
Sensitivity: Global controller sensitivity and Y inversion options have been added to the Controls settings panel. These have been decoupled from the mouse sensitivity and inversion settings.
Remapping: a controller column has been added to the control mapper in the settings. This will allow you to rebind the controller buttons as you like. These settings are saved per controller device.
On-Screen Keyboard: when using Steam’s Big Picture Mode or Steam Deck, an on-screen keyboard will appear when needed for inputting text. For players not using Big Picture Mode you will need to use your keyboard as before.
Vibration/Rumble: By default, controllers will rumble throughout the game for combat and interactions. Settings have been added to turn this off entirely, turn it off for just combat or interactions, or tune it individually via strength sliders.
Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue causing the game to feel slow-motion at lower frame rates.
Improvements
Camera look speed is no longer coupled with frame rate resulting in smoother aiming across all frame rates.
Improved Spanish localization.
Increased some small font sizes across the game to help legibility across a range of screens and resolutions.
Changes
Sprinting is now pushed to activate rather than hold across all input devices. This feels much better on the controller and has been requested a lot by the community for keyboard players too.
What’s Next?
Once any issues with controller support have been ironed out, I will be focused on the late Summer’s major content update: Rooftop Farming. As this starts to grow and become ready for public consumption I will be sharing updates via the community Discord. 🧑🌾🌱

Adam

The Walking Trade - Patch v1.1.2
100k Players!
This week marks a huge milestone for The Walking Trade as we have managed to surpass 100,000 copies sold! Before we get into the patch notes I’d just like to thank everybody who bought the game, created content for the world to enjoy, kept Robin safe, reviewed and gave such critical feedback and suggestions! Most have been so kind and supportive, despite the major bugs early on. As a one-man dev it’s been a crazy couple of months but thanks to such a great community the game is in a much better place and will continue in that direction.
Features
Multiple items can now be automatically crafted on the crafting station by setting the new settings next to the Craft button. Automatic crafts only work while the materials remain present.
Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue causing Drop Dead Docks contracts requiring Miniguns to be sold not counting during a sale.
Fixed a bug causing the camera to hard-lock when attacked with the crafting menu open.
Starting a new save after playing an existing save in the same session will now reset item defaults (marked price, ignored by cleaners etc.)
Fixed an issue causing days to skip twice when sleeping.
Fixed an issue causing the Shredder to grow/shrink when used in quick succession.
Fixed an issue causing upgrade requirements not being detected despite having the items nearby.
Staff members named Amelia will now show their name correctly.
Improvements
Optimized global NPC pathfinding data reducing general lag when lots of NPCs are active.
Reduced the lag when opening and closing doors.
Reduced the lag when a vehicle (exotic merchant/builders) parks outside the car park.
Reduced the lag when securing an item in Build Mode.
The Shredder can now be turned on or off.
The Shredder can now be configured to prevent outputting specific items.
Changes
Increased Uzi staff combat power value to bring it more in line with the rest of the weapons.
With the new items accessible via Drop Dead Docks contracts some players have been killing it with their decoration. This update's best shop design goes to the goated Kamikaze:

As with any update, new bugs may appear or maybe I didn't manage to fix the ones I thought I had. Please let me know either way!
Thanks again, Adam ❤️

Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue causing Drop Dead Docks to sometimes be inaccessible after loading a save.
Fixed an issue that broke pallets when Security staff refill turrets with ammo from a pallet.
Security staff should no longer try to grab ammo that the player or other entities are already holding.
Changes
Reduced the base Extend cost for active contracts from 5000 to 1000.
If you still encounter these issues please let me know asap!
Thanks again,
Adam

Everyone seemed really happy with last week’s big quality of life update (aside from a few new issues I will address in the future) so I’m hoping this trend continues today. A few weeks ago Hellraids dropped to cover the ‘end-game’ system for those who love dividing and conquering hordes of brutes and rotters. Today I’m really excited to announce that two new locations on the world map have been discovered with repeatable 'end-game' shop content to unlock over 75+ new decoration items!
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45342874/2b94984063c2e0ce288bd87693f5ed3adcc3b7a7.png"]
Features
A brand new location on the World Map has been discovered on the coast: Drop Dead Docks. Here you can activate contracts for selling high quantities of select items in a set time frame for unique rewards, mostly decorative pieces. Contracts are randomly generated and can be re-rolled (increasing each time) or extended for batteries. Once any contract is completed successfully the re-roll cost will reset.
To help with shifting your stock you can now contact the new Mobile News Crew on the World Map. These guys can be found around the Church and can advertise your shop for you. Just let them know what item you wish to promote, the promotion length and reach, and you’ll see an influx of customers heading in to the store to buy that item.
Over 75+ new decoration items have been added to the game including several lighting objects.
New shelving units including the Wasteland Chiller, Wasteland Chilled Counter and various tables.
In Build Mode some items can now be secured to other secured items permanently for decorative purposes. For example, you can secure a plant to a secure shelf.
Improvements
Added an item tool tip when highlighting over item icons on the UI.
Decorative plant items that were previously in the game can now be secured in Build Mode.
More area in the bedroom can now be used to secure items.
Changes
The Bone Revolver crafting recipe can be found as a reward from a Drop Dead Docks contract.
I expect the Discord’s #share-your-shop channel to blow up with some incredible new designs once players get their hands on the new items! With some contracts requiring a high amount of certain items to be sold it may uncover that some items are really hard to obtain in bulk. Be sure to share tips with each other and let me know if you feel some are far too hard to obtain in the quantities needed.
Roadmap
I have been asked a lot about the long-term future of the game since launch and have been suggested so many good directions I could take it in. I’ve got a rough plan for the next year that I’d like to show without spoiling too much. That said, as a one man band it is very hard to commit to things long-term as I need to consider my own situation/finances, manage burnout, plan my next game etc. so please do take this roadmap loosely - these aren’t promises set in stone.
May/June 2026 - Housekeeping
Full Controller Support
Full Steam Deck compatibility
A deeper focus on optimisation, particularly during raids
Late Summer 2026 - Rooftop Farming
Unlock the ladder in the Warehouse to reach the store roof
Plant, grow and harvest fresh produce to sell, donate or craft
Discover Meadowspring Farms on the World Map for access to tools and seeds
Uncover the secrets of the local Tribe and gain their favour for unique rewards
Late 2026/Early 2027 - Into the Bunker
Prepare to explore the sprawling bunker depths
Encounter new enemy and boss types
Return to the surface before your gas mask fully depletes to keep and sell your loot
If you have any issues with the new update please let me know in my community Discord or Steam Discussions as I read regularly. I’m aware that there have been some issues with the last quality of life update and these will be addressed in the near future.
Thanks again and have fun,
Adam ❤️

Hey guys, I know a lot of players have wanted some much needed quality of life and that's exactly what this week’s update is delivering. Staff have definitely taken the biggest focus with new perks, quick reassignment and role configuration.
Features
Staff members will now remember their last assigned job. At the start of the day you can reassign it with one button by right-clicking them. This also persists between sessions.
Level 3 Service staff members can now empty containers with contents onto the floor before putting them back onto the basket stand. The intention is for cleaners to then organise the emptied items.
Level 5 Service staff members can now retrieve secured items for customers when not serving customers at the checkout.
Level 5 Security staff members can now refill Mountable Turrets and Auto Miniguns if there is no immediate threat to deal with.
Day Rewind: You can now rewind to a previous day's save directly from the main menu, with up to 10 days of history retained per save slot. Choosing to rewind and playing through that day will overwrite any future progress beyond that point. Hardcore saves cannot use this feature.
Added a new Carcass Balloon item that can be crafted using a Carnival Balloon, Large Bones and Rope. When released outside, the Carcass Balloon will fly away, luring away any revealed raid for an extra 30 days. This can be stacked indefinitely to effectively never encounter raids ever again.
Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue causing Cleaner staff getting permanently stuck holding an item they cannot path to place.
Fixed an issue causing the HUD notifications to overlap when too many notifications occur at once.
Customers will no longer accept price changes after picking their desired item.
Fixed an issue causing items to despawn overnight when taken from beyond the car park and left on the shop floor.
Improvements
Players can now use containers to fill up Mountable Turrets and Auto Miniguns.
Players can now use containers to dismantle many items in the shredder.
Added configurable Scavenge job settings, allowing you to enable or disable auto-repeating scavenger tasks.
Added configurable Floor Worker job settings, allowing you to enable or disable item organisation, corpse disposal, and corpse shredding independently.
Added configurable Security job settings, allowing explicit Store room selection and the new turret refilling feature.
Added configurable Service job settings, allowing you to enable or disable serving customers, emptying containers, placing containers back and retrieving secure items.
Staff members will no longer charge batteries again when re-assigning a job of the same type (excludes World jobs).
Customers should now queue at multiple available checkouts more evenly.
The Skills button on the HUD will no longer say “New Upgrades” for a skill tree with fully unlocked nodes.
Improved the UI when highlighting a staff member to show their current HP and last or current job.
Changes
Security staff will now run back to their post rather than walking.
Added Tapes Pipes crafting recipe to Thom’s Toolshed.
Added Minigun and Chainsaw to the Trailer Park scavenge loot table.
Removed Neuralink Node from the Trailer Park scavenge loot table.
Reduced the AK-47 loot quantity in the Quarantine Zone loot table.
As much as I have tried to test on new saves and existing ones, with this being such a large update please do get in touch if you notice any new bugs or any of the bugs listed above are not actually fixed in your game. Discord is the best place but I do read Steam discussions often too. The next update will contain more QoL, some new mid-end game shop features as well as new decoration items for the game! I will be creating a loose roadmap soon too for the longer term plan.
Thanks as always,
Adam ❤️
