NO GENERATIVE AI WAS USED IN THE PROCESS OF CREATING SHUJINKOU

Player Praise and Feedback (Beta Period) ✅
We hosted a Closed Beta testing period from June to July 2024, where we received feedback from many players who played the Windows version of Shujinkou. They had access to around 30% of the story campaign. Here are some of the comments we received:
✅ "I really love how much Japanese integration there is while still retaining a full game scenario—an ultimate success in gamified learning!"
Player who knew hiragana and basic vocabulary before playing.
✅ "My favorite part was that I'm learning a skill I can use with time, so it's not even that guilty of a pastime like most other games."
Player who had no knowledge of Japanese before playing.
✅ "I basically played it every day I was able to, and found myself genuinely learning things to the point that I, without any help, read what someone wrote (in Japanese) on a Discord server the other day."
Player who has wanted to, but struggled to learn Japanese for over a decade.
For Learners: Swap to English at ANY Time! ⚙️
Shujinkou is able to swap the majority of its user interface text into one of four displays—English, Japanese, Furigana (helper kana for kanji), and Romaji (romanized Japanese).
If you are not using any English displays but feel a bit worn out from all of the Japanese, you can immediately swap the game into "English Mode" at the click of a button, and continue to play through Shujinkou just like you would any other JRPG.
Dozens of Other Gameplay & Learning Mechanics 🎻
Shujinkou is filled with dozens of other gameplay and learning mechanics, woven into the overall experience in such a way that each and every player will feel like their playthrough is unique. Whether you want to treat Shujinkou like a full-scale learning tool for Japanese, or play it like a story-driven, mechanically complex JRPG inspired by some of the most timeless, classic role-playing games, Shujinkou is at your fingertips, ready to provide you with an unforgettable time.
Our soundtrack is filled with over 150 tracks of music, including a wide array of genres from classical to metal, jazz to electronic, gypsy to Eastern, and plenty more!
Experience a full-fledged Jukebox that allows players to listen to all of the music in the game. The Jukebox music continues to play while actively checking any and every menu.
Reminisce on the dozens of fullscreen illustrations drawn by our talented Art Team through the Gallery Menu, which gives players access to all of the illustrations that they have seen throughout Shujinkou's story and side-content.

We've got some small bugs addressed and fixed here:
Fix issue with some VFX throwing a harmless error screen to some players. Sorry!
Fix issue with the game having input issues and an error screen appearing for players who have unorthodox control/gamepad setups.
Fix issue with error screen popping up due to a lines bug relating to Jin's Nen'oshi.
Fix issue with UI screen for Kotoba Kyuugi's Kanatama View throwing an error and error screen.
Fix issue with error screen popping up when trying to connect a gamepad to the game specifically during its bootup screen.
Our apologies for the inconvenience—all of these issues were fixed thanks to players reporting them through our in-game bug reporting system. We'll strive to further improve the game and take out any pesky bugs that may appear in the future.
If you've been hammered in the world of Shujinkou lately, we would love it if you could consider writing a review for the game. They help us a lot, and sometimes provide us nice feedback for future titles!
The second game has been in production over the last year, but deep production has really started to amp up over the last month. We're expecting to share more details on it sometime next year. Please look forward to it!
Thanks as always and we look forward to bringing you our next update soon 😀

Shujinkou Patch v1.45 Hotfix 1
We've got some small bugs addressed and fixed here:
Fixed an issue where D-pad was not really working super smoothly/reliably on Steam Deck. This wasn't an issue a few months ago and was traced to a non-Shujinkou bug with Unity, but we apologize for it taking so long to find and fix!
Small architectural changes to help make the upcoming v1.46 update run smoothly.
Thanks as always and we look forward to bringing you our next update soon 😀
Shujinkou Patch v1.44 Hotfix 1
We've got some small bugs addressed and fixed here:
Confirmed and fixed an edge case that some completionists encountered involving being unable to unlock the last achievement. Apologies for the inconvenience!
New QOL Feature: There was a question about turning off the bobbing camera while in battle by a fellow player salty here, and while we didn't have this feature in the game at the time, it was implemented and tested over the last 48 hours for an urgent release. We hope this makes your player experience more pleasant!
The new setting can be found below the Camera Bobbing (Labyrinth) option.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38470489/fe74987aa47c499f7ab05e30c2657fd7a890185d.jpg"]
And here's a look at a disabled Camera Bobbing (Battle) option in action:
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38470489/b4f8ae4e5f9b1a81d7ecf202c41198a360f79c51.gif"]
Please note that if the rotating room is dizzying, this can also be disabled / toggled off in the options. We included the rotating room to give that extra dynamism in battle, a decision that our artists, director, and early playtesters agreed on during development.
One more note - the Mac version has been updated to "support" M1-M5 chips. Unfortunately, we do not have any Apple Silicon models and have not been able to test performance on those devices. It likely has to do with what this player mentioned in their review about performance, as we were able to nail down that it was a macOS version that they played (rather than Steam Deck and PC, which have not had those bugs reported by anyone just yet).
We will look into prioritizing Mac fixes and polish over the course of the next few months!

"I always approve of games that are both excellent to play and also educational in some way. That’s part of the reason that I love Civilization so much—over the years it has inspired me to look into all kinds of history.
I want to highlight Shujinkou for this too. An indie project driven by the passion of one person, Shujinkou is an excellent dungeon crawler in its own right.
But what makes it really noteworthy is that it will help you learn Japanese as well, with the text starting out in English and slowly changing to Japanese as you play on and learn new words. Inspired work."

"Shujinkou combines classic dungeon crawling with a Japanese language-learning layer that ties directly into combat without turning the game into homework.
Kana-based weaknesses, adjustable UI language options, and optional grammar explanations add real structure to how you approach encounters, and the JRPG side still carries its weight through turn-based strategy, strong music, and a long-form story.
It feels like a full RPG first, then a smart learning tool built into the rules."

We've got some small bugs addressed and fixed here:
Fixed a rare edge case with ultrawide monitors showing a strange display for certain ultrawide devices starting the game for the first time, as reported by a player here.
Fixed some harmless exceptions causing the pink error screen to at times appear when in the Nation Map, as well as when a Yajuu intercepts a standard enemy encounter.
Various other small fixes and optimizations.

Shujinkou Patch v1.40 - Hotfix 2
Hi there, we've released a second small hotfix that fixes some big and small issues that players have recently encountered.
Please note that we are still working hard on the Shujinkou v1.41. Expect more exciting news, QOL, and bug fix notes soon.
Bug Fixes
Fixed a tree that was poorly positioned in the Himamura combat area.
Fixed a layering issue with some Youkyuu Boards in certain towns.
Fixed the wrong icon (ZR/R2) being shown in the Kanakae combat tutorial, as the correct icon is (ZL/L2).
Fixed a number of optional town dialogue exchanges that were improperly timed in the story.
Several improvements and optimizations have been applied.
PS5: A strange degradation last month caused a small pool of users to become unable to unlock PlayStation® Trophies despite the equivalent achievements being unlocked in-game. This issue has been fixed in v1.001.010 and will automatically unlock all desynced trophies upon loading the game.
We'll keep our eyes peeled for issues and apologize for the inconvenience caused by bugs. Thank you for playing Shujinkou and we look forward to seeing you again deep in the labyrinths!

Shujinkou Patch v1.40 - Hotfix 1
Hi there, we've released a small hotfix that fixes some big and small issues that players have recently encountered.
Bug Fixes
Fixed a bug where checking the Records Menu after playing but never winning a minigame would cause the game to crash / stop working. One player affected, and our apologies for the inconvenience.
Fixed a written mistake where the Bestiary entry for the Hebi enemy would mention that it is weak to both Fire and Metal element, but in-game it was only weak to Metal. Now, the Hebi enemy is also weak to Fire.
Fixed an issue where pressing R3/CTRL while in the Youkyuu Player Menu would spoil the names of undiscovered/hidden Youkyuu to appear.
Fixed an issue where the button navigation for the Quick Sell functionality, which can only be unlocked by clearing a certain heroine's 1C Kizuna, would break navigation and be hard to re-navigate without usage of a mouse or touch screen.
Fixed an issue where sometimes navigating through certain menus quickly would cause the Pink Crash Report screen to appear despite there being nothing fatal enough to interrupt or stop gameplay. This issue has been encountered by Demo players recently too, but the Demo is currently at d1.39 instead of d1.40. We plan on uploading an update for the Demo version within the next 24 hours.
A few typos here and there were fixed regarding certain data in the game.
We'll keep our eyes peeled for issues and apologize for the inconvenience caused by bugs. Thank you for playing Shujinkou and we look forward to seeing you again deep in the labyrinths!

Shujinkou v1.40
Polish / Quality of Life
New Setting: A new setting called Four Displays Toggle is available! You can enable and disable English, Japanese, Furigana, and Romaji to your preferences, and only the enabled displays will be cycled when pressing R3 or CTRL.
This was requested on our Discord community by multiple players. The option requires keyboard or controller D-pad movement to activate.
Battle: You can now toggle the Enemy View menu when focusing on an enemy while selecting an Arawasu skill or while selecting a Combat-based item.
Battle: We've polished the UI animation and game flow of Combat menu navigation, making certain menus feel even smoother.
PS4: Fair FPS improvements and memory optimization on this device. We noticed that the PS4 base model crashes for users far more often than the Pro, and are continuing to look into this. Our apologies for the inconvenience.
Optimization: FPS greatly improved when navigating the Party Menu, playing certain Fuu Lobby minigames, and while on the Nation Map.
Optimization: Improve performance of text in dialogue when Text Scroll Speed is set to Skip in the options.
Optimization: The time it takes to exit a battle after the results screen appears has been reduced by 1-2 seconds. Keep grinding out there!
Optimization: Further improve the bootup sequence and systems so that the transition to the main menu is even smoother for weaker devices.
Optimization: Major optimization! We noticed significant lag on weaker devices when navigating the final Yajuu-based puzzle in Labyrinth 5 (Area 1). This led to a code optimization that reduced memory usage and spewed garbage by over 70%!
Visuals: The six partners, Shu, Jin, Kou, Kyuukou, and Tsurugi look better than ever with improved texture optimizations—they now look even better on large TV screens!
Bug Fixes
Fixed incorrect SFX that would play when pressing inputs while viewing the end conversation after finishing a game of Kendama Kombo at the Fuu Lobby.
Fixed fish moving with a slightly strange sense of lag on PS4 and weak devices in the game Sakana Sensou at the Fuu Lobby.
Fixed a bug where the background of the Party Menu would turn black when using Quick Travel to leave a shop and head to the outside areas of a town.
Fixed Four Display R3/CTRL not working in the Item Compendium menu.
Fixed situation where notifications that appear on the top right of the screen would be hidden by a black screen during loading.
Fixed a situation on PS5/PS4 where the screen would not fade to black before certain major Story bosses.
Fixed an issue where the Cover Illustration for the Akagi would not appear when entering the area from the Nation Map.
About the Ultra-Wide Fix
If you missed it, you can find the instructions here: [dynamiclink href="https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1386630/view/498324120760483940"]
Our Biggest Priorities
We want to add a "Fast-Forward" (by holding a certain key) to some minigames so that they can be played and progressed through more quickly.
We've noticed some physics inconsistencies in Tatiana's minigame, Kotoba Kyuugi, and are looking to fix this in the near future.
We've noticed that when holding a button to move, then sliding your hand (while still holding the button) to another button occasionally does not allow the player to rotate properly in the dungeon. We are looking to fix in the near future.
Thank you!
Thanks for playing! We hope you enjoy the experience, and feel free to join our Discord community if you need assistance with gameplay, want to suggest features or provide constructive feedback, or want to meet and chat with other fans of Shujinkou!
