Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers is Sonic Team's 2022 reboot of the franchise's 3D direction — a deliberate move away from the linear "boost-corridor" structure of the Generations / Forces era and into open-zone level design across five massive Starfall Islands. You're hunting Chaos Emeralds, you're stranded with mysterious ancient creatures, and the platforming language is reimagined with grappling/grinding mechanics that integrate with the open environments.

The combat system is built around Cyber Space sequences (faster, more traditional Sonic linear stages) interleaved with open-zone exploration where you take on titans (story-significant boss creatures the size of small mountains) using a new combat moveset. The five islands each have distinct biomes and puzzle styles. The post-launch "Final Horizon" update added playable Tails, Knuckles, and Amy plus an extra island.
