Official update history
A new patch for Way of the Hunter is now available on all platforms. For quite some time, herd genetics weren’t behaving the way they should, even careful management didn’t really pay off. That’s been sorted out in today’s patch. Herd genetics should now respond properly to your management again, and habitats should be working as intended.
We’re really sorry for the inconvenience this caused. We know this issue has been frustrating, and we appreciate everyone who took the time to report it and stick with us.

Hello Hunters,
As many of you know, Way of the Hunter 2 recently entered Early Access. It’s been quite a ride so far — as with any game launch, there were a few hiccups along the way — but overall the response from you, the players, has been incredibly positive and motivating for the entire team. Thank you for that. It truly means a lot to us.
Over the past couple of months, our focus has been almost entirely on getting the sequel ready and supporting it through its Early Access launch. That said, we want to reassure you that we have not forgotten about the first game or the community that helped it grow into what it is today.
You may have noticed a small update downloading for Way of the Hunter. This was only a minor asset change in the main menu to update the Way of the Hunter 2 banner window with the current information. Even though we have been very busy lately, rest assured that we have also been monitoring issues in the first game.
Several players have encountered bugs that we still plan to revisit and continue investigating. This includes the so-called “fitness bug,” which we are fully aware of and have been tracking internally. While we cannot yet provide a clear timeline for when this issue will be resolved, it remains on our list of priorities that we intend to address first.
If you run into an issue in Way of the Hunter and haven’t reported it yet, please do so via the THQ Nordic Redmine, to help us track and investigate the problem.
Also, if you haven’t already, be sure to check out Way of the Hunter 2 in Early Access. There’s currently a launch sale, which makes this a great opportunity to jump in at a lower price, experience the game as it evolves, and have a real say in shaping its future updates and features.

THQ Nordic and Nine Rocks Games are excited to announce Elkcrest Island, the fifth and final map DLC for Way of the Hunter, and for the first time ever, it is completely free. Serving as a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated players and community who have supported the game over the past 3.5 years, Elkcrest Island marks a celebratory close to the Way of the Hunter journey before the studio turns its full focus to the next title in the franchise. At the same time, players can look ahead: the Steam page for the upcoming project goes live today, allowing fans to begin adding the game to their wishlists. While the final name is still in discussion, this marks the official start of the next chapter for the development team.

Welcome to Elkcrest Island
Update 1.31 is now live, and it brings Elkcrest Island, a remote northern wilderness, rich with North America's most iconic game species. This isolated, sparsely populated landscape also debuts a new predator in the franchise: the North American cougar! And the most requested animal is making a comeback: Merriam’s wild turkey.
Players can explore dramatic hills and mountain ranges to scout major big game, from moose and elk to Bighorn sheep, caribou, Sitka deer, Wood bison, and the imposing Kodiak bear. Those seeking variety can head to serene lakes and open plains, home to wild ducks, surf scoters, pheasants, and lesser scaup. Available Now – Update 1.31:
Alongside the free DLC map Elkcrest Island, update 1.31 is now live on all platforms. This update also brings the North American cougar to Nez Perce Valley, Aurora Shores, and Elkcrest Island - harvest one or explore its need zones to unlock more info in the in-game encyclopedia. Alongside the new content, update 1.31 fixes essential issues and provides compensation for players affected by the previous update 1.29.1 before the hotfix. Let’s take a closer look.
Compensation for Players
Update 1.31 also brings several fixes and includes compensation for earlier update issues.
For everyone:
All players receive compensation for the inconvenience caused by the update 1.29.1. Since some players lost a rare-fur trophy, we’re adding a guaranteed high-fitness rare-fur animal to every reserve:
Nez Perce Valley: Melanistic Mule Deer - Private/Lowland
Transylvania: Albino Red Deer - Private/Lowland
Aurora Shores: Melanistic Alaska Moose - Primary/Grassland
Tikamoon Plains: Albino Cape Buffalo - Private/Savanna
Matariki Park: Albino White-Tailed Deer - Private/Lowland
Lintukoto Reserve: Melanistic Fallow Deer - Private/Highland Forest
For players affected by update 1.29.1:
If your save file was impacted and you loaded the game before the hotfix was available, this update will apply a herd-management recovery boost. The game will identify weaker animals in affected habitats and increase their fitness by 50% toward the habitat’s gene-pool maximum, which means a small boost to those, who have lost their herd management progress. As part of this process, the game will automatically trigger a new in-game year the first time you load in after the update, but only for those affected saves.
Additional improvements:
Some herd management stats that previously failed to load correctly should self-correct over the next two in-game years.

Hi hunters,
After Update 1.29.1 went live, many of you reported issues that needed our immediate attention. Some players experienced certain herds losing their genetic potential after loading a save, with a few habitats affected more heavily than others. For those impacted — we’re genuinely sorry.
The addition of turkeys in 1.29.1 unexpectedly put pressure on parts of the herd-management logic, which caused some herds to break and trigger resets. That one’s on us, and we’re truly sorry for the frustration it caused. Over the past two days, we’ve been digging into the issue, and the hotfix for Update 1.29.1 is now available on PC.

Hotfix for Update 1.29.1 - Breakdown:
Corrects the English name for Merriam’s turkey (other localizations will be fixed in an upcoming update).
Resolves an issue where Mule deer near the lodge could spawn in unusually high numbers.
Stops the herd-genetics reset from happening going forward.
Protects save files for anyone who had not loaded the game after Update 1.29.1. If you backed up your save or hadn’t launched the game yet, your herds should remain intact.
We want you to know that we’re still actively investigating the issue. Today’s hotfix focuses on preventing any further progression loss while we continue looking into the issue.

Turkey season is here! Maybe you’re already thinking about Thanksgiving - the stuffing, the pies, the turkey. But before you ruffle its feathers, the long-requested turkey has officially arrived in Way of the Hunter, free for all players. Right now, they might be easy to catch (after all, we want everyone to have a turkey on their plate for Thanksgiving dinner!), but rest assured, they will be harder to hunt after the holidays.

Halloween, the perfect time to head out after sunset and see what’s lurking in the dark… if you dare. This patch adds a handful of cosmetic touches to capture the Halloween spirit and set the right eerie mood for your hunts. You’ll find pumpkins decorating lodges and cabins across Nez Perce Valley and Transylvania, and glowing animal eyes lighting up the night on all maps after sunset.
