Our Next Games + New Mode for Black Hole
Hey there, we hope you've had a nice start to your June! Cory and I are doing well and have been hard at work on our next games. As always a huge thank you for the continued support and feedback about our new modes! While we are busy cooking our next game we still have a few plans for new modes although no promises on when the next modes will come.
Our New Studio:
Cory (Thornity) and I (Aarimous) had such a great time co-creating A Game About Feeding A Black Hole that we decided to create our own studio Aarimout and Thornity. We are going to continue making games together and have expanded our efforts to partner with fellow indie developers to co-create their games. We think of it like a blender between developing and publishing their games.

New Orb Breaker Mode:
To celebrate our new game Orb Breaker we added in a silly new game mode called Orb Breaker. You'll break asteroids and spawn tons of orbs that will bounce around breaking asteroids for you. The mode takes about 10-15 min and you'll spawn so many orbs that you'll start to lag and I am ok with that because I love seeing all the chaos!

Patch 1.7 Notes:
Added a new game mode “Orb Breaker”
A silly mode to celebrate our new game Orb Breaker.

Added in a setting for Scientific Notation (you're welcome esotericist)
Removed the pop in animation from upgrade screen since it felt odd once you got to end of the tree

And yes.. we are crazy enough to try and make 3 games at once! How.. you ask? Well we’ve partnered with 2 other solo indie devs to co-develop Mining and Dwarves and Just Keep Fishing. Whereas Orb Break is entirely Cory and myself. More to come on all these games shortly.

- Ok, so the last patch made Roguelike Endless mode a bit too endless. So in this patch I tried to find a middle ground between the wall that existed in 1.6.1 and then linear scaling in 1.6.2. Let me know if this feels better. My goal is for the game to end at some point but for you to be able to push against the game to compete with each other to find a true world record sort of run.
- Added a % of the level indicator to the game over screen so you can see how far you got.
- Update the record for Roguelike mode to now show the level you achieved and the percent through that level. For example 12.56 would mean I beat level 12 and got 54% of the way to level 13. My goal here is to support showing off your best runs with each other.
Adjusted Endless mode scaling for Roguelike Mode to remove the hard wall at 31. I mostly want to see how far you all can push in endless mode.
Added controller support for the new Roguelike Mode upgrade screen
Fixed a controller bug where the game mode selector would lose focus when changing game modes
Added a thank you section to the credit for those who helped with translating our game
- Lowered the matter needed to grow the black hole at level 20 by about 10%
- Significantly reduced the endless mode levels for the first 10 levels and then a more aggressive scaling will kick in after 30.

I hope you’re having a wonderful start to your May! We recently hit 200,000 players… a number that I truly can’t even imagine. This game has changed my life and will allow me to keep making games and following my passions. A black hole sized thank you to everyone who has played our game, left a review, and shared it with a friend or two.

Roguelike Mode:
This patch has been a long time coming and we’re excited to announce that Roguelike Mode is now live!
Thank you to everyone who helped us test the various prototypes, shared feedback, and reported bugs. This is by far the most unique game mode we’ve released today and required a lot of changes under the hood as well as net new development for the user interface.
This mode takes about 20 min to win, but we think it will take you a few tries so hopefully this at least another hour or 2 of fun for you (if not more). Please let us know if you have any more ideas.

You beat this mode by simply growing the Black Hole 20 times. Each time you grow the black hole you'll be taken to an upgrade screen where you get to pick 1 of 3 randomly generated upgrades. Each time you grow the Black Hole you'll need to feed it more! And yes.. there’s endless mode once you beat the mode.

Let us know what you think of this mode, we had a few constraints based on the core of how this game works and we're pretty proud of what we cooked up.
New Custom Music:
I've always dreamed of having a composer create custom music for my games, but as a self funded indie game dev I never had the budget. Until now! With the success of this game I've been able to commission a new soundtrack for Black Hole. We tried our best to keep the vibes of the previous music while also leaning into the style of our composer. I'm incredibly happy with the results and I'd highly encourage any game dev's to reach out to Dexter to commission some music.

Patch Notes:
Added a new game mode “Roguelike Mode”
Grow the Black Hole. Choose 1 of 3 random upgrades. Repeat. Game over if you fail to grow the Black Hole in time.

New achievement for beating this mode
Added a custom upgrades screen to show a choice of three
You can re-roll a choice once per upgrade screen
Added a stats panel to show you the current stats
Reworked all the effects in the game so they can be applied to Asteroids
For this mode, when the timer runs out there is now a bit of grace period to allow any remaining matter to flow into the Black Hole
Added rarity labels/colors to show if you have a low, medium, or high rolled value. Thematically this is normal, rare, and epic. But functionally they all have the same chance of spawning
New Music!
We commission a composer to re-score the soundtracks
I've always wanted custom music in my games and with the success of this game
Added Dexter to the new credits screen as well as the game over screen
Added a new Credits screen to the main menu
Visually updated the the upgrade screen so the nodes and lines will pop in starting at the center, functionally nothing has changes, but I think this look way more satisfying
Fixed a bug where nodes on the tree were getting duplicated when loading a save file. Functionally nothing changes but this should lower memory costs slightly
