About the Game
MISERY is a co-op rogue-lite survival game.
You play as PMCs guarding a secret research institute in the Republic of Zaslavie.
The Scientific Institute for Research of the Zaslavie Exclusion Zone (SIRZEZ) was built before the war to study anomalies and artifacts. Over time, these artifacts became the cause of conflict between international military blocs. Neither side could allow artifacts to fall into enemy hands, ultimately leading to nuclear war.
A siren sounds — a nuclear bomb is incoming! You have 60 seconds to grab whatever you can and make it to the bunker. Then, the survival begins. Each day, you venture into the Exclusion Zone to scavenge procedurally generated locations: abandoned military bases and research stations, radioactive wastelands, and ruined cities.
The Zone is full of secrets and deadly traps, and radiation is far from the only threat.
You’ll encounter other survivors ready to kill for food and resources, weird mutated creatures with unique behaviors, and various anomalies.

No one knows how exactly anomalies work or their origin. Some phenomena can help you, others will tear you apart. Anomaly areas often hide artifacts — rare, valuable items distorted by anomalies and charged with unique effects.

The bunker is your new home.
Expand it room by room: install generators (gas, solar, or gnome-powered), build crafting stations, grow food, cook meals, and decorate your shelter with whatever you drag back from raids: a table, a dresser, a worn-out sofa, or even a cozy rug. Don’t worry, the previous owners won’t be needing them anymore.
After each raid, you can unwind and chill at the bar in the basement of the institute: have a drink, talk to other survivors, and trade your loot and rare artifacts with the merchant.

Remember, watch your vitals.
In the Zone, people can easily die from hunger, thirst, radiation sickness, or lose their minds and turn on their teammates. Go out looting during the day, and return to bunker before nightfall.
And one last thing: the Zone plays with your mind. Too much stress and you’ll start hearing whispers, seeing things that aren’t there, and feeling someone watching you. Lose your grip, and not even the bunker will save you. Nothing will.
Life in MISERY isn’t easy.
But there’s nothing better than going through it all together.
Exploring bandos with friends, watching each other’s backs, sitting by the fire, drinking whatever’s left, and exhaling smoke into the cold rain — in moments like these, you can feel alive again!

Optimization and bugfix.
This is what changed in the Zone: Another major update on optimization.
Global rework of how shadows and physics work in the Zone, resulting in a significant FPS boost, up to 300% in some of the areas and hardware configurations where the CPU was a bottleneck. The work is not done yet, and we continue improving performance, especially on heavy locations like the Megafactory in future updates.
Now you can change difficulty and custom parameters for your world, no need to start a new game. Please note, there is no way back if you change the difficulty from Hardcore to any other.
Electricity fix: now combiner should work properly. Please report any anomalies, and our electrical team will deploy and fix them.
Anomalies fix: some anomalies had extremely high damage and no sound, which caused seemingly random instakills, especially the static shock anomaly. Now fixed.
Now you can "loot all" from the open container. Press "R" with an open container to do so. It will also equip items in their respective slots if they are empty. It should now be easier to loot your own corpse.
Hermit crab locations are fixed; he should not get stuck now.
Various minor fixes and asset updates.
Thank you for your attention, have a nice day!
UPD: Survivors, electricity bug noted. The electrician is drunk, we can now wake him up. He will fix everything tomorrow.
Here is what changed in the Zone:
- Major asset optimizations: LODs, draw distance, navigation, etc.
- DX is back to 11, as we found out many players use hardware that does not support DX12. You can still use DX12 if you would like to by running the game with the -dx12 parameter.
- Melee weapon collisions fixed.
- Incoming damage flinch significantly reduced, now you can shoot more accurately under fire.
- Sprinting on Steam Deck fixed + general sprinting interruptions fixed.
- Microfreezes when opening the menu fixed.
- Camera clipping in 3rd-person view fixed.
- Show/hide HUD hotkey changed to "Alt+1" to work on any keyboard layout.
- Wild dwarf behavior improved.
- Domesticated dwarf AI bugs fixed.
- Large bunkers optimization improved.
- Anomaly animations improved.
- Enemy AI optimizations improved.
- Plague doctors now have guns again. Peace treaty is over.
- Improved death feedback.
- Minor changes and bug fixes.
We keep working on new content, fixing bugs, and improving optimization. If you reported a bug, it was 100% noted and is now being fixed or researched. Everything related to controller support, electricity bugs, phantom items in the inventory, etc. is all noted and will be fixed.
Thank you so much, and good luck in the Zone!
* Increased inventory space in the Butcher Workbench.
* Advanced Splitter and Combiner recipes fixed.
* Exoskeleton armor fixed.
If you have an integrated graphic card or old PC in general and experience crashes and VRAM errors after the latest update - launch the game with the "-dx11" attribute and it will fix it. We are working on a more convenient solution.
Citizens of Zaslavie, please read what was changed in the Factory Hotfix #3
All jackets\\uniforms now have some minimum armor, and rigs/armor vests provide armor for the whole body except the head.
The logic here is that jackets provide inventory space, while vests provide armor as a primary utility. You will also suffer fewer random crits: in the previous update, hits to your legs or arms ignored armor, causing mortal damage. Wearing a jacket now provides some minimum armor, but do not rely solely on it for protection, wear helmets and vests!
Artifacts' selling price increased.
Bread price increased to 10.
Ash efficiency increased 5 times.
What was the logic behind the bread farming economy changes? We noticed that many players found a loophole in the economy by farming and selling bread and then burning cash for ash. That created an infinite money glitch and let people get rich with no risk in the Zone. We believe that to have a good life, you have to go explore the Zone. In the last update, we over-restricted the economy, and now, thanks to your feedback, we're balancing it. We will keep tracking how it works, how survivors farm and scavenge, and make further adjustments. We are also concerned about the possibility of burning cash and may turn it off in a future update. Let us know what you think about this idea.
Grafts stopped regenerating back to their full form. What sounded like a cool idea in practice led to the situation where survivors did not finish these monsters and let them multiply infinitely, creating deadly swarms. This was a threat to the Zone. After some manipulations with the ecosystem, they no longer do that. Their hearing radius also got smaller, so you can avoid contact if you are really careful.
On the opposite side, Chuvirla damage increased. Be really cautious with this monster.
Lightbulbs are back in the loot spawn.
Loot in the Factory biome fixed.
The idea in the Factory is that there are more containers than in other locations, but not all of them contain loot. UN is stealing stuff from Zaslavie and extracting it back to their territory, or they have already used some of the gear and consumables they brought with them. However, because of the bug, many containers that were supposed to have loot didn't. This is fixed now. Please let us know how you feel about it. We will keep an eye on the feedback and stats.
Tooltips for items have been moved slightly so they don't obstruct your view when aiming, building, placing, and using items. Shout out to the cable guy who was really rooting for this fix.
The butcher table is fixed. It now has a larger inventory. Some trophy recipes are also fixed. We will add the ability to sell stuffed mutants in the next big update.
The sledgehammer is now craftable in the standard workbench again.
Hunting loot chances improved. We do think that it is more interesting when you have a chance in the hunt, and not boring guaranteed loot every time. But chances were too unfair before. Now it is much better. Sometimes you are out of luck, but sometimes you score big time.
UN temporarily stopped dropping supplies to the Factory zone, so ZAF does not bomb it with GRAD. We've got information that it will return in the next update with better equipment, possibly UN guns.
Landmines spawn fixed. Now they are more visible and not drowned in soil and concrete. Yes, BEWARE: FACTORY HAS LANDMINES.
For players experiencing loss of HUD/Inventory interface: In the update, we added the possibility to hide the HUD by pressing "~". We see that many players accidentally press it and lose their HUD. So now to switch HUD on and off, you need to press ALT+"~".
If you do not see your HUD, try reactivating it with this hotkey or in the game options menu.
The first round of optimization is here. We switched to DX12 and significantly improved UE navigation tech, which previously caused major lag in some locations. We also improved LODs for about 30% of assets. In some cases or areas, this increased FPS by up to 200%. We will continue our work on this and will issue further updates to improve performance. If you notice any artifacts or problems with NPC navigation, please let us know.
That is all for today. Thank you for your patience and all your feedback.
Please keep it coming, it really helps us to make Zaslavie a better place!
