About the Game
Put Back Stuff is a cozy organisation game about taking a terrible mess and tidying it up with satisfying sounds and feedback.
Pick up an item, figure out where it belongs, and put it back where you want it to be within the category. That’s it. No rushing; just thousands of misplaced objects, plenty of empty shelves, and the quiet satisfaction of watching chaos slowly become order. You have labels at your disposal if you're a planner, collectibles to gather and mess to fix. You can use abilities to work faster or take your time.
How you play is up to you.
Put Back Stuff is a game that has room to grow. More levels are being worked on and planned across different themes, so there'll always be more to tidy!

Restore an Australian supermarket filled with more than 5,000 placeable items over 300 unique shelves. Sort products into their correct departments, group matching items together, and gradually uncover the floor beneath the mess. Discover local products and lost property collectibles.

Note: Image shows early development of the Craft Store map. This is not representative of the final product. For updates on this, check back later.
Take on a craft store containing more than 2,000 placeable items. Sort paint, yarn and fabrics, restore the displays, and confront the important question: should wool be organised by colour or by ply or texture?

Organising thousands of products is a big job, but you won’t have to do everything the hard way.
Earn coins as you restore the levels, then spend them in the Training Module Skill System to unlock and improve useful abilities. Summon missing objects, run faster, locate the shelves things belong on, carry more at once, and become the highly trained employee you were always meant to be.

You might stumble across some 'lost property' on levels. These fun trinkets are an extra bonus and can be hard to find. Can you locate them?

You can place up to 100 sticky notes per level on any surface. Will you plan out your shelves in advance or use them to document your descent into organising insanity?

Customize your own playlist in game so your soundtrack suits your vibe. Want some relaxing lo-fi or something a little more upbeat? We have options!

Steam Patch Notes
Official update history
Hello friends! The following patch was largely player driven. Thanks to regular reports to my emails, feedback from streamers and discussion threads, we have some improvements to share.
New keybinding options:
Hold to throw toggle
Movement key options, including individual rebinding
Cycle inventory items, from scrollwheel to individual button.
Improved throw/place/pick-up cross-binding logic.
Slightly bigger settings window on the main menu for readability.
A sprint keybind option
New accessibility settings:
Crosshair can now be resized and coloured
Editable Outline Sizes - Individually tune the thickness of ability outlines and item hover outlines
Movement vignette strength can now be edited.
Tutorial updates:
Tutorial now extended to include the shopping cart and managers office because positioning an arrow made out of egg cartons and a mysterious trail of watermelons into the managers office was not working flawlessly to lure players into finding features.
Tutorial pop-up no longer covers 'Use computer' pop-up, so if you want to change your BGM before doing the tutorial, you can.
Collectibles update:
The trinket shelf in the managers office now shows a counter of collectible items, so you'll know what's missing.
Saves:
Saves now correctly load the players saved location, rather then making them start from the start of the level
Loading saves now retains the loading screen until the game is properly loaded, no more things jumping around
Loading screen for loading saves from the pause menu
Sprinting:
Sprinting no longer changes your actual set FOV. This was unintentional and would reset the players chosen FOV.
Sprinting now functions correctly. There's a slight shift in FOV and speed increase that is a visual cue for you sprinting. And of course, the different footsteps sound.
Sprinting is definitively impacted by your walk speed. The more walk upgrades you have, the faster your sprint is too.
General movement:
Players now navigate collisions a smidge smoother. Less getting stuck on corners but not so much that you've become incorporeal. You should still attempt to not walk into shelves, just like real life.
QOL:
Smidge of an increase in the base walk speed. Now with sprinting it's wild, tbh. Go zoom!
Increased FOV range for FOV slider in settings, increased to 140 from 110.
Shopping carts:
Shopping carts debug feature when rammed into solid objects now detaches the cart from the player, stopping haunted carts from following you around without you touching them.
As always the help option under the pause menu for unsticking your cart is helpful if you do anything silly with your cart.
Performance:
Fixed some rendering settings that were causing major issues for some players.
Fixed some of the 'outline' items logic. This was what was causing some players to slowly accumulate lag over longer play sessions.
General changes to improve CPU/Ram usage.
UI:
UI edits for Steamdeck and Mega-ultra-wide-huge-monitors. The big-mega-giant screen people scare me, but I'm trying my best to cater to them too.
For clarification, but not changed:
Carry increases, walk speed, sprint, jump, sticky notes, shopping carts and crouching does not impact your ability to earn the 'no abilities' run achievement.
Thank-you for all the kindness. Onwards and Upwards! This experience has been genuinely life changing for me.
Updates:
Saves: Saves are now less system intensive to complete.
Saves: Autosaves now are forced shortly after you complete a shelf, allowing better progression saving against crashes.
Saves: Autosaves no longer spam your save-list. They occupy just one slot per level and update the same save slot.
Saves: Game forces an auto-save more reliably on quit.
Controllers: Game now detects your controller and switches to the appropriate control scheme automatically. It'll also save your existing keybinds for your other control schemes.
Visual: Fixed two upside down labels at the register shelves.
Item: Lemon Sports Drink incorrectly read 'Lychee' on the bottle, now fixed.
Performance: Item physics performance adjustment should help people experiencing some performance setbacks. But this will be pending player feedback if any changes are noticed at this stage.
I've also heard feedback regarding keybinding. This is a focus for me at the moment and more work will be put onto keybinds to give you more options. At this point, some keys when double-bound have some funky reactions, so providing more context to key usages is important to me.
As always if you have any specific system feedback, bugs or suggestions you want me to see, I recommend checking out our community discussions or reaching out to me via email directly at [email protected]
If you're reporting a performance issue, it'd help me to understand more about the issue at the time - including your specs.
There's more updates on the way, but I wanted to get this - particularly the controller update - out as soon as I could.
Thank-you! :)
Launch Hotfix:
Visual: Made the exposure/colour of the ground and items close to it less bright, for reducing eye-strain.
Visual: Grapefruit colour now visibly more different to Oranges.
Visual: Reduced Lighting intensity
UI: Main menu edits to better suit all screens, including Ultra Wide monitors which had some clipping issues
Shelf Labels: Fixed a bug where the shelf labels for 'register candy' were showing the incorrect numbers.
Keybinding: Fixed a bug that was preventing keybinding from working at all.
Keybinding: Removed keybinding conflicts. If you want to bind pickup/put down both to your left click, you can. This also stops the Sticky note keybinds from blocking unrelated keybind changes.
Keybinding note: Players are warned that binding Pick up/Put on shelf to the same key means you'll only be able to remove items from the shelf you're looking at if your hand is empty/holding a different item then what is on the shelf. I recommend keeping pick up on another key/button, but you do you! Play around to see what works for you.
Shopping carts/Abilities: Magic hand can no longer summon items out of the cart. This was causing some very cursed item duplication/misplacement bugs. This is a temporary removal and will be reinstated later, I just want to have a closer look at the logic.
Known bugs:
Sprinting: Sprint is 'toggle' for everyone it seems, not a 'hold to sprint'. It's a bug, technically, but it probably benefits players
Saves: Reloading a save does not place the player in the correct position, instead it defaults them to the 'start point' of the level. Low impact.
Saves/Abilities: The auto-save can disturb abilities in progress.
Performance: There's some outliers who seem to have performance difficulties. Currently I'm trying to find a familiar thread between these instances. If this is you, email your system specs and some information on your performance difficulty to [email protected]
Thank-you for all of your support!
I'm always in the discussions, in my emails and in general around to keep improving things based on your feedback. So don't feel afraid to share it :)
Bug Fixes:
Colour blind mode fixed
Updates:
Level start email edited to contain more tips and information.
Help section of the pause menu has been updated with better information
Tweaked some product starting locations to naturally direct players to certain locations and guide early shelf filling.
Adjusted the scale of Shelf Labels
Level select menu design updated on Main Menu
Floor further edited to make it less shiny/less of an eyesore.
Updates:
Carts: Usable shopping trolley/Shopping cart placed near store entrance. Simply grab the handle like you're picking up an item - even if you've got things in your hands - and start walking! Press the same key to let go again. You can add and remove objects to/from the basket the same way you add and remove items to shelves. It can hold 20 items. Yes, at times it looks a little funny with large and cumbersome items.
Carts: Note that for future levels, carts may not be available for small levels due to environment size and other factors. But large levels, carts will become a staple.
Carts: 'I'm stuck' button updated to also recall lost carts/trolleys in case you somehow throw it into the void somehow.

Shelf Labels: Updated to now reflect the quantity of the item on the shelf and it's required completion quantity. Placing a watermelon down, for instance, will show you 1/6, indicating you've placed 1 but 6 are expected in total.

Visual: Adjusted floor crack textures to match floor shininess changes.
Achievements: New silly achievement
This is likely the last feature update patch pre-release! Anything from here until Monday and likely the first week post-launch will be addressing any bugs or QOL issues that come up.
Updates:
- Save System: Repaired some bugs that made it hard to restore saves from old versions of the game.
- Save System: Changed the logic in how save data for products and shelves is captured.
- Function: Added a 'reposition items' button to the menu that, if you have <50 items less and you suspect some are stuck, you can press it to place the remaining items in the middle of the store. Useful for debugging.
- Visual: Supermarket floor is less shiny.
- Ability: Sprint speed improvements
- Keybind: Sprint keybind option added.
Known bugs:
- Sprinting: Sprint is 'toggle' for everyone it seems, not a 'hold to sprint'. It's a bug, technically, but it probably benefits players
- Saves: Some older saves from much older game versions may have a few 'lost' items. The new debug option fixes this.
- Saves: Reloading a save does not place the player in the correct position, instead it defaults them to the 'start point' of the level. Low impact.
Pre-release patch notes:
- Music: 2 Audio tracks removed from playlist function due to being sensory nightmares.
- Music: Playlist Menu slider now bigger
- Music: Fixed bug where your song would restart/change every time you alt-tab or open the settings.
- Visual overhaul: More saturated, warmer colour palette and assorted texture updates
- Visual overhaul: Smoother item appearance
- Visual overhaul: New art, advertisements and easter eggs
- Feedback Assist: When a shelf label turns yellow, it indicates a shelf has the correct product type on it. When it is green, it now means that it is fully, correctly stocked. This has also been edited into the tutorial.
- Settings: De-whimsification of 'Magic Hand' ability toggle available. Under general settings there is now an option to switch off the float/sparkle effects for Magic Hand and make it an instant summon, effectively speeding it up.
- Ability: Magic hand now makes noise to indicate you've used the ability.
- Outlines: Outlines for product and shelf finder abilities are now thicker and easier to see..
- Movement: Faster initial walk speed and walk speed upgrades.
- Inventory QOL: Inventory items now re-order themselves to group same items together, to make placement smoother without you constantly needing to scroll and this fixes the auto-place bug.
- Saves: Continue button added to main menu
