About the Game
The answer is hidden in plain sight, you just need to ask the right questions.
Vaudeville is a groundbreaking, narrative-driven detective game that immerses you in the heart of Europe, in a bustling city renowned for its captivating charm. As the famed private investigator, Detective Martini, use your wit and intuition to uncover the intricate secrets lurking within this city's vibrant streets and shadowy corners.
In Vaudeville, you're thrown into a complex web of murder, deceit, and intrigue. And the innovation doesn't stop there.
Vaudeville uses advanced AI technology to create dialogues in real-time. You can interact with the city's intriguing inhabitants using natural language, either by typing or talking into the microphone. Every conversation, every interaction, is unique to your game, offering an unrivalled level of immersion.

Investigate the brutal murders of three individuals, each with their own harrowing story. As you explore, you'll encounter a diverse cast of characters, each with their own secrets to hide. From the enigmatic lion tamer, Monsieur Saxabar, the beguiling burlesque dancer, Marina H, the secretive widow, Mrs Potter, to the arrogant nobleman, Count Gravesen - everyone is a suspect.
Explore exquisite locales, from the enchanting Cabane Violette, the chaotic Circus Saxabar, the eerily beautiful Gravesen Manor, to the mysterious wilderness of the Blackwoods. Collect clues and engage in gripping dialogues to unveil the truth.
Step into Vaudeville, a world where art and music conceal a tale of murder and deceit.
The truth is just a conversation away. Can you solve the mystery before it's too late?

Official update history
In our quest to bring the offline LLM to as many machines as possible, we have just released a new update (1.3.0) that dramatically increases the range of compatible hardware the game can run on.
In particular, we focused on systems that struggled the most after the previous update: Steam Deck and other handheld devices, some non-CUDA-compatible GPUs, and integrated graphics cards.
Our tests show that the game’s performance and stability has improved significantly across all the hardware we tested.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/28a1db94e1f816119f5aea638a815a7ac0d616b1.jpg"]
We would like to remind you that the online version will remain available for a while. It can be activated from the Beta panel in the game’s Properties on Steam. The online version uses a remote server to process dialogue, allowing the game to run smoothly even on slower machines.
We will discontinue the online version once we have verified that the offline version functions correctly on the widest possible range of hardware.
If you still experience any issues running the game after updating to version 1.3.0, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us through our Discord server or via email at info\bumblebee-studios.se
Today we launch our biggest update ever: a completely reworked game flow that allows for modular world-building, scalability, countless future feature additions, and gives users control over content creation.
The Vaudeville Story Vault (VSV) will be home to many new adventures, including official stories from the developers and partners, as well as user-generated content.
Included with the latest release of Vaudeville, you’ll find the brand-new Editor (VSVE), accessible by clicking the Workshop button in the main menu. From there, you can access different functionalities, ranging from creating your own stories and submitting them to the Steam Workshop, to running adventures locally or sharing them privately with friends through our .vsv file format.
We look forward to seeing the Vaudeville community’s contributions, whether they’re new and engaging stories, casual character interactions, or goofy, meme-worthy moments.

Select Create New Story.

General Tab
You will start in the General tab.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/186d54f96691468d54799d424e0f5d32b337cac2.jpg"]
Workshop Info: Enter information about the item. This does not affect the story itself; it only sets the public description shown in the Workshop.
Common Rules: Specify rules that every character will follow when replying to the player. This determines how strict or loose their behavior will be. Writing in the second person (e.g., “You will / won’t…”) is the most effective approach.
Time Period and Location: These are self-explanatory. The location refers to the general setting (a city, country, or fictional world) where all characters exist, not their individual locations.
Common Knowledge: Information that every character in the world knows. Use this to establish the setting, backstory, and main plot.
IMPORTANT: Never add information that you don’t want characters to reveal, neither here nor in the Knowledge tab. AI is very bad at lying, so if something must remain secret, do not tell it to the character at all.
Characters Tab
Move to the Characters tab and create a character by pressing Create New Character.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/4644e5aed95ba6e6b82d3cd6a5d84fb1b0255020.jpg"]
The main text field should be self-explanatory. Again, write using the second person, as suggested by the placeholder text.
Use the Goals field to express what urgency or motivation the character has toward the player. For example, if the character is a police chief seeking help to solve a case, make that clear here.
The Actor dropdown determines the character’s appearance, chosen from existing Vaudeville universe actors.
Additional options will become available once you’ve created locations and knowledge entries. We’ll return to these later.
Locations Tab
Open the Locations tab and add a new location using the button in the bottom-left corner.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/20f1b513754b759aac22388e69457083e796cbec.jpg"]
The text fields are self-explanatory. Follow the placeholder examples for optimal results.
The Template dropdown determines which existing Vaudeville scene will be used as the backdrop.
Locked at Start determines whether the location is visible at game start or must be unlocked through dialogue. At least one location must be unlocked in order to publish a story.
In the keyword field, add words that allow characters to unlock the location.
Example: If you add “coroner” or “autopsy” as keywords for the Morgue, the location will unlock when a character mentions those words. You can add further instructions in the character description, such as:
“If asked about the autopsy report, tell the player they can find it at the morgue.”
“If asked about the missing jewel, reply that you don’t know anything about it.”
There is currently no hard limit on the number of locations, but more than 15 may clutter the map screen.
Knowledge Tab
In the Knowledge tab, define pieces of information that can later be assigned to characters.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/fc0511fa80af6bc77f6185c6c520dd6fd85883b7.jpg"]
The Name field is for reference only and has no gameplay function.
The Description field is what truly matters. Use the placeholder text as guidance.
Assigning Knowledge and Locations to Characters
Once you’ve created enough locations and knowledge entries, return to the Characters tab.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/b50169009d033ecf102002e5a0d9cfeb0240664e.jpg"]
Location: Where the character is currently situated.
Can Unlock Locations: Select which locations the character can unlock when prompted by the correct keywords.
Knowledge: Assign relevant knowledge entries to the character.
Accusations Tab
The final tab is Accusations.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/9fe2e06c841a85e416f28a00203b8b1dc5e4a23b.jpg"]
List all questions the player must answer correctly to solve the case.
The Name field is for reference only; Question is what the player will see.
Add answer options using Add Option. At least one option must be marked as true.
There is no limit to the total number of options, but only up to 16 will be shown at once. These include all correct answers and a random selection of false ones.
You can change to order of the questions using the Move Up and Move Down buttons
Answer order is randomized at runtime.
Publishing Your Story
Once all tabs are complete, return to the General tab. Here you can validate, test, or author your content.
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43343362/c896b8ed366fb4d8ac0dcdf42ab3fb222c1e5557.jpg"]
When you’re ready to distribute your adventure to the Story Vault, press Export to Workshop. The story will be published and should become publicly visible within a few minutes.
The time has come!
Vaudeville is leaving Early Access and gets its official release today, with a 35% launch discount.
It has been two and a half years since Vaudeville first arrived as an Early Access title. Back then it was an overambitious solo project, and none of us expected the reaction it got. Seeing some of the biggest content creators in the world play it took us completely by surprise.
Since then we have worked hard on it and gone through a real rollercoaster. All of that eventually pushed us to build our own offline version of the AI tech at the core of the game. Conversational AI, speech recognition and text-to-speech now run locally. No internet needed.
We have also put a lot of effort into removing AI-generated art from the game. We believe that AI as a game mechanic can improve the experience, but it cannot replace real artists when it comes to visuals, music or storytelling. When we began this project, generative AI was still new and its dream-like images felt perfect for the mood of Vaudeville. Now that they are everywhere, they no longer create that same atmosphere. There may still be small traces left here and there, but our plan for future development is to go fully AI-free in the art, aside from the real-time conversations that define the game.
This is not the end of Vaudeville. It is just the beginning. As soon as we can put the heavy technical work behind us, we will focus on creating new content for the game.
Here is what we have added since the original Early Access release:
New 3D environments
A new character (the Librarian)
A story mode with location unlocks
Offline AI that works without internet, protects your privacy and keeps the game alive forever
Better AI prompts
Twelve language translations for the legacy online version
A more polished interface
A Linux and SteamOS version (Steam Deck Verified)
Full gamepad support
Improved accessibility
Achievements and community items
Temporary limits in the new version:
No multi-language support yet. This is still in development for the offline version and has no set timeline. Other languages remain available in the legacy version
Steam Deck performance is still being tuned
The game is very stable according to our tests, but performance may vary depending on your machine
The legacy version will remain available through the Steam beta channel for non-English speakers and for low-end hardware. It will be discontinued only once multi-language support has been added to the official release.
These changes have been simmering in the Beta Channel for a few weeks and are now ready for an official release:
- New Game Mode: Story Mode The player starts with only the Police Station available. Detective Martini must unlock other destinations through conversations with characters.
- Improved Characters The characters have been enhanced with more detailed information and will respond more consistently, with a reduced chance of hallucinating or going off-topic.
- Three Save Slots Players can now run three different instances of the game, each with its own game mode, notes, unlocks progression, conversation history and relationships with the characters.
- Achievements There are now 12 different achievements to earn. Besides the original two for starting and winning the game, there is now one for each time a new location is visited in Story Mode.
- New Voices More realistic AI voices provided by Eleven Labs to enhance immersion.
- Community Items 12 Trading Cards, each for a character in the game, 5 wallpapers and 9 emoticons to collect and show-off.
- Added Info and Disclaimer Players are now informed about the use of AI in generating dialogues and how their data is handled.
- Notebook Import The first time a player starts a new Save Slot in Sandbox Mode, the notebook from the legacy version is imported into the save game to preserve all notes previously taken by the player.
We hope you enjoy!
