About the Game

Battle Brothers is a turn based tactical RPG which has you leading a mercenary company in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. You decide where to go, whom to hire or to fight, what contracts to take and how to train and equip your men in a procedurally generated open world campaign. Do you have what it takes to lead them through bloody battles and to victory?
The game consists of a strategic worldmap and a tactical combat layer. On the worldmap you can freely travel in order to take contracts that earn you good coin, find places worth looting, enemies worth pursuing or towns to resupply and hire men at. This is also where you manage, level up and equip your Battle Brothers. Once you engage a hostile party the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as detailed turn based combat.

- Manage a medieval mercenary company in a procedurally generated open world.
- Fight complex turn-based tactical battles with historical equipment and brutal injuries.
- Permadeath. All characters that die in combat will stay dead – unless they return as the undead.
- All characters come with their own background stories and traits. Want a stuttering ratcatcher, a greedy witch hunter or a drunkard disowned noble?
- Character development without a restrictive class-system. Each character gains experience through combat, can level up and acquire powerful perks.
- Equipment that matters. Different weapons grant unique skills – split shields with axes, stun enemies with maces, form a spearwall with spears or crush armor with a warhammer.
- Diverse enemy roster. All enemies have unique equipment, skills and AI behavior.
- A dynamic event system with atmospheric encounters and tough decisions outside of combat.
- Three late game crises – a war between noble houses, a greenskin invasion and an undead scourge – add a looming threat.
- Two full hours of orchestral soundtrack.
- 70 Steam Achievements and Steam Trading Cards.

Overhype Studios is an independent game developer studio from Hamburg, Germany. We are devoted to making great games that we want to play ourselves. With Battle Brothers we strive to reflect the creativity, complexity and originality from the old days when game developers were passionate gamers, not corporate businessmen. While doing this we took a lot of inspiration from some of the best games out there: The original X-Com, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and Jagged Alliance.

Build 17793052
Mar 20, 2025
This update brings a bucket load of fixes accumulated over the last year, as well as some small content additions. You heard that right: There’s actual new content for Battle Brothers, for free.
We added two new legendary locations to discover in the world with unique fights against several entirely new enemy types, offering a fresh challenge to the jaded mercenary. Can your company hold their own against the shambling horrors that are golems molded by cultists out of the flesh of the fallen? Can they overcome the Grand Diviner’s dark arts?
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/8544093/5818b65fe048cfdc6255cf8e2c3a048f52210c2d.jpg
These new legendary locations are conjoined by a small narrative told through illustrated events. While the first location, called the ‘Abandoned Village’, is suitable in difficulty for mid-game companies and can be found by simply exploring the world, the second location is more difficult and will be revealed only after the first one has been conquered. Both locations offer new loot and legendary items as reward for overcoming their challenges.
A new campaign is required for the new content to be accessible. All other changes and fixes mentioned below will apply to existing campaigns as well, though.
Note that most mods will not work anymore until they've been updated by their authors to work with this new version of Battle Brothers. If you’re using mods, you therefore have two options:

- Remove all mods and play the newest version of the game. If you don’t remove all your mods, the game may not work correctly or crash outright.
or - Keep playing with the previous version of the game and without the new content, at least for now. Because Steam automatically updates the game to the most recent version, you’re required to manually revert back to the previous version. Simply follow these few steps:
- Go to your Steam library.
- Right-click on ‘Battle Brothers’ and select ‘Properties’.
- Go to the tab labeled ‘BETAS’.
- Select ‘1.5.0’ from the drop down menu.
Steam should now download the previous version and once finished you can keep playing as normal. - Go to your Steam library.
Changelog for 1.5.1.4

Build 11990036
Aug 21, 2023
As some of you already discovered, we’ve been working on our next game - called MENACE - for a while now. We’ve been prototyping since after the full release of Battle Brothers in 2017, and have gone into full production after the Blazing Deserts DLC was done. Now we’re finally ready to show what we’ve been working on for all that time.
Like Battle Brothers, MENACE is a turn-based tactical RPG - with the same type of deep mechanics and replayability you've come to love. Unlike Battle Brothers, MENACE has a sci-fi setting and plays out on a larger scale. You'll lead a strike force of marines sent to the far frontier, answering distress calls across different worlds and taking on threats both human and alien. You'll be in command not just of individual soldiers, but of entire squads, as well as tanks and even mechs.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2432860
Battle Brothers spent two years in Early Access, and all the feedback and bug reports we received from you guys during that time was immensely helpful in building the game that it is today. That’s why for MENACE we’re also aiming for an Early Access release in late 2024. No worries - we’ll of course continue to update Battle Brothers in order to take care of any issues as they come up, and may even add minor content from time to time - such as the new player banner we added just a couple of weeks ago.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years, and we hope you give MENACE a spin as well. Wishlist it now so that you don’t miss anything when it comes out!
