About the Game

Task Force Admiral Vol.1: American Carrier Battles is a single-player experience centered on the command of an early Pacific War US Navy carrier task force. As the overall commander, you are in charge of seeking the destruction of the enemy naval forces and preventing your opponent, the Japanese Navy, from accomplishing its objectives. To achieve your aims, you have at your disposal the most fearsome sea projection weapon known to Man in 1942: your carrier air groups and the task forces that support them.
As a carrier task force admiral in this pioneering age of air/naval warfare, assume the mantle of retribution in this innovative interpretation of a classic topic, as the first title in a new series that will further explore and develop the genre. Forget about the limitations of the past, and let the best of wargaming and simulation blend and blossom together in this new take on command at sea! Re-live the great battles of the first year of the Pacific War as if you were there yourself. In here there is no dice roll, no artificial skill-tree, no arbitrary stats, selective fog of war or supernatural crystal-clear communications. It is real-time crisis management for you, realism and historicity without concession, as little abstraction as can be, and loads of action, suspense and refreshing gameplay packed in the same single computer software.

The full game at the end of Early Access will include the following content:

Some small housekeeping today.
10/05/2026
Change to the automatic victory system: we do not force the end of a given scenario anymore based on the enemy fleet retiring from the battle. This mechanism will be revisited later as we fine-tune the scenario editor and its options.
Added missing US cruisers seaplanes to the Coral Sea order of battle in the generated scenarios.
Fixed overlapping items in Air Order of Battle panel.
Fixed several bugs affecting hydrobases.
Fixed a crash when deleting a strike.
Fixed a crash when starting a new scenario multiple times.
Finally, please note that Task Force Admiral is currently on sale for Steam's Autumn Sale event until Oct. 8!

Ship detection by aircraft is now impacted by clouds.
o Limited to the first cloud layer.
o This is still rough, future tweaking is expected.
o Expect scouting missions to now have a chance of reporting contacts later, in an incomplete fashion, or not at all.
o Following reports from the forums regarding questionable target selection when visibility is impaired, the changes only affect naval search missions for now. The behavior of strike packages will be investigated further.
Updated the "Crane" and "Patriots" scenarios with the new AI system. Please report any weird behavior.
Enabled the new AI system in the Midway mission generator. Please report any weird behavior.
Camera "head bobbing" state selection is now persistent.
Fixed a conflict with circles being drawn when editing a search mission.
Fixed a crash when recording TacView if the username contains non-ASCII characters.
Fixed crashes when starting a scenario multiple times.

The latest patch for Task Force Admiral is out, with some major items in terms of accessibility & looks. Here's the dope:
09/19/2026
User Interface
New, cleaner UI look! Some menus still need to be updated. Please report any glaring issue.
Added some new tools available on the strategic map to draw circles and add annotations
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37689795/6fd656fe45cd595e572a52e294b8b5d24f0ed35b.png"]
QoL: added a new option to increase the scale of the HUD.
Mostly useful for 4K monitors.
Warning: a higher scale might result in overlaps, use with caution!
Fixed buggy list box item selection in 4K resolutions.
Fixed issues with plane icons covering tooltips in the Ouija panel.
Enemy AI system redesign
Introduced a new, still experimental AI system for enemy fleets.
Only enabled in generated Coral Sea scenarios.
Nothing should change dramatically for the moment, as we are just recreating the old behavior with it, but it is the foundation for something much more reactive and modular that is yet to come, and will be useful for new game modes.
If you see the enemy doing weird things, such as sending planes during the night, please report it, so that we might fix it quickly.

Added crew on all Lexington class carriers.
Fixed the time scale automatically reverting to 0 during gameplay.
New aimsight in fighter combat mode, mimicking the design of that of the original Wildcat.

A new patch including the previously mentioned video tutorials is now available. Besides, an updated version of the demo, incorporating these changes as well as the Simplified Chinese localization, has also been put online.
New video tutorials: to access them, you can either click on the Naval Academy button in the main menu, or open them in-game through the new icon on the toolbar at the top of the screen. Currently, these videos are only available in English and without subtitles, but once the new video player has been sufficiently tested and debugged, we will integrate these new functions. Concurrently, we will carry on with the work on the interactive tutorials and the other videos (Briefings, Tactics).
[img src="{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37689795/97c4d60817c779707e76742a76e919113a6cc445.png"]
Changed the Ouija overlay GUI so that all modes are now using the same "blackboard" look.
Unit icons on the strategic map have been improved.
Fixed a bug related to multiple deckloads strikes.
Fixed an issue with map icons tooltip.
Fixed a timeline tooltip issue.
Most of the other fixes are about the new GUI and a few problematic crashes which were caused by these new functions.
Also, of note: an updated version of the demo has been put online, that includes the Chinese localization and the tutorial videos.
Last but not least, Task Force Admiral is on sale until Monday, September 7, 10 AM PDT as part of the MicroProse Publisher Sale! Click here to check out all the deals! These include of course games such as Battleship Command, Sea Power, HighFleet, Boat Crew, Carrier Command 2... A myriad of titles you might be interested in if you enjoyed Task Force Admiral, whether because they are about carriers, WW2, or naval combat in general.
Also note that the very tempting Deck + Conn will be available from September 1, that is, Tuesday next week. It will take you to space in a manner reminiscent of naval surface and submarine combat, in an excellent, innovative package that will nonetheless feel strangely familiar to players who experienced the early 1990s.

After a short mandatory Summer break, the team is back in action. The newer patch
New scenario: "Kantai Kessen". Protect a relief convoy on its way to Midway as the Japanese navy tries to interdict it and provoke a decisive engagement with your carriers. Enterprise, Hornet, Yorktown and Saratoga are making a pincer around the enemy fleet - will it hold long enough?
Note: the relief force in Midway is the first occurrence of an allied non-player naval unit in a scenario. You cannot change its course or speed for now, so do try to sweep ahead of it. It can also set as a target to be covered with CAP from your carriers.
New objects fully integrated: BB Yamato, BB Nagato, CA Mogami, APD Manley.
Japanese seaplanes can now carry bombs (Jake, Pete) and torpedoes (Mavis, Emily) when allowed to strike. Beware.
A new pop-up was added to allow you to jump to your strike in the 3D view when it makes contact with the enemy. It works along the same lines as the current fighter alert, and can be disabled in the settings.
Several fixes done to the GUI for widescreens.
Fixed several AI and GUI bugs, along with a few new crashes.

Your feedback is important.
Added a popup to cancel a mission not yet greenlit when closing the strike planner.
Fixed old search missions still listed in the search planner if all planes have been lost.
Fixed long scenario titles overlapping other text in the save panel.
Fixed tooltip still visible when HUD is hidden.

Fixed some of the bugs when strategic-level terrain avoidance messed with air operations.
Fixed shadowing search planes ditching while tracking a sinking ship.
Fixed issue often preventing Ryujo to launch strike aircraft.
Fixed freeze when a damaged AI carrier wants to set-up a scramble.
Fixed cases of missing escort in AI strikes.

Added experimental animated 3D deck crew.
Only on USS Yorktown (CV-5) for testing purpose !
Lacks some waiting poses.
A lot of small visual bugs may be visible.
Animations are still work in progress.
One needs to enable it from the game options from the main menu to see them. Doing it during a game session will require you to reload the scenario/save.
The new feature might have some impact on raw performances, but shouldn't impact time compression.
Feedback is very much appreciated
Added air intercept alerts.
Added a new pop-up alert that appears whenever the player’s fighters encounter an enemy scout, strike group, or escort force for the first time. The alert pauses the game and allows the player to jump directly into the cockpit of the nearest fighter, focus on that fighter in the 3D world, or skip the encounter.
These alerts will only appear once for each enemy force. Subsequent interceptions of the same force will not trigger an alert.
This feature can be disabled in the settings. When disabled, these alerts will no longer appear during gameplay.
Bug Fixes
IJN Type 91 air-launched torpedo performance has been tweaked. Its much more limited range might have a visible impact on how long an American carrier needs to keep dodging them before being in the clear.
Several crashes & air ops bugs corrected.

- A destroyed aft flight deck section will make all landings impossible.
A couple small updates were pushed before the weekend. After a few bugs were corrected, here are the current patch notes ahead of the release of another scenario, hopefully, next week :
24/04/2026
Major changes made to the way strikes manage target assignment, especially by the AI player, to make it feel more natural and efficient.
We have introduced a new mechanism allowing for long-range CAP patrols (LRCAP). These patrols are managed on the CAP interface (Fleet Plot) like any other CAP patrol. The mechanism is still experimental and requires further testing, so please report any bugs.
These patrols can be assigned to another task force or an arbitrary player-defined position on the strategic map (see the "target" setting).
Once over their target, these aircraft will circle and attack any enemy in sight. Note that assigning a patrol to a task force means that it will follow it around.
IMPORTANT: It does not check range for now, so make sure that the range/fuel is compatible with the aircraft type.
Note that beyond a certain range (basically line-of-sight range from their original base), CAP fighters will be on their own and will only be able to engage targets they can identify visually. There is currently no FDO (Fighter Direction) backup, even if you place them over a friendly task force with radar.
We are aware that this new mechanic will allow new ways to abuse the existing setting - we are interested in that feedback too, so as to define relevant, balanced limitations that will keep this option valuable, yet refine its scope.
Historical note: this mechanism is there to allow CAP missions over friendly units or specific spots, which were a common occurrence in 1942-43. See it as a valuable tool to recreate the fighter cover during the Watchtower landings, for instance, or Enterprise's CAP efforts when covering Chicago at Rennell Island, to name a few applications.
Thanks to Foxman for the screenshot.
