About the Game
Windrose is a survival adventure set in an alternative Age of Piracy. It features the classic “build, craft, survive” formula along with intense combat and engaging exploration on land and sea.
Progress through vast procedurally generated biomes filled with hidden mysteries, hand-crafted dungeons and quests. Gather your crew and captain your ship through brutal naval combat with boarding actions and seamless transitions between ship and shore.
Defeat challenging bosses on your swashbuckling adventure driven by real-world characters and supernatural forces alike.
Every legend begins with a reckless crossing.
You are a captain who dares to challenge Blackbeard. What begins as a grounded story of survival and revenge draws you into a growing conflict between empires, pirate clans, and mysterious dark powers looming on the horizon. Windrose is steeped in the allure of the Age of Piracy.
Answer the call of the seas and move seamlessly between ship and shore. Naval combat is shaped by your decisions, whether you’re trading cannon fire at range or closing in for fierce boarding actions. Equip and customize your ship to suit your playstyle, from nimble ketch to versatile brig and monstrous frigate. And when the cannons go silent, claim your spoils and share a sea shanty with your crew as you sail onward.
Establish a foothold in vibrant, diverse biomes, gather resources, and build to your own taste, from simple shelters to elaborate mansions and fully developed forts. Recruit NPCs and grow your settlement to speed up harvesting and production.
This world belongs to the brave and the curious, so venture into the uncharted lands. Over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest contain endless secrets and treasures, though such rewards rarely come without risk. Trade with different factions to gain the edge you’ll need.
Hack, slash, batter, and shoot your way forward! Master a wide arsenal of melee weapons and firearms. Parry and dodge enemy attacks, chain different strikes, and keep an eye out for new gear, including sabers, rapiers, halberds, greatswords, pistols, muskets, and more.
Shape your combat style through talents and flexible loadouts with unique armor sets. Use food and potions to gain powerful buffs. Test your skills against a wide range of enemies and challenging bosses, defeat them, and claim their treasures.
Windrose is fully playable solo offline or in co-op with friends, supporting up to 8 players, with both self-hosted and dedicated servers available. Procedural generation will make each journey stand out. Please note: due to performance, especially in the late game, we recommend to play in the party up to 4 players for the optimal experience.

Hey, captains! We’re rolling out a new Steam Cloud Saves update intended to fix the issue with corrupted saves. We’ll be closely monitoring your feedback and will respond accordingly if any issues arise.
Version: 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb
Save files improvements
Implemented a new storage and backup system for save files
The game now automatically backs up all data every 10 minutes of gameplay and upon exiting
Updated the save file structure for cloud synchronization to minimize syncing issues
Broken save files no longer block the game from loading
Data Recovery UI: If the latest save file for a world or character is found to be broken at startup, a special UI window will appear. Players can either quit the game (e.g., to attempt a cloud resync) or recover data from a backup. The game will automatically offer the latest available one
Save Migration System: Implemented a system to migrate old save files (pre-version 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb) to the new format. In most cases, this process is seamless and invisible
Migration Conflict Handling: If the game detects old, corrupted save files that cannot be properly migrated, a notification window will appear with information about the affected files and a prompt to delete them
Other updates
Fixed an issue where D-pad Left was incorrectly mapped to the "Take All" action in the crafting station UI
Updated the Wolf Head item icon
Known Issue
Characters created before version 0.10.0.4 cannot be deleted due to Steam Cloud synchronization. This is a known issue and will be fixed in a future update.
Your game settings will be reset after this patch. Please back them up manually if needed.
Ahoy, captains!
[p align="justify"]Thank you for your patience and support throughout our journey. In this update, we’ve focused on addressing some of the most commonly reported issues so far.[p align="justify"]Among the changes, you’ll notice improved connection stability, reduced disk and CPU usage, and a variety of quality-of-life adjustments designed to make your overall experience smoother.[p align="justify"]As for Steam Cloud Save fixes, they’re still on the way. Version: 0.10.0.4.268-9d2ca277
Important bits
- [p align="justify"]Added a new setting: Force Relay Connection. Doesn't work with Direct IP connections. Sometimes players are unable to connect directly to their friends’ games because P2P traffic is blocked along the route. - [p align="justify"]Fixed unnecessary CPU usage on idle servers and clients
- [p align="justify"]Disk usage during gameplay has been reduced

Ahoy, mateys!
First off, thank you. Seriously. The amount of love and support you’ve been showing us lately hasn’t gone unnoticed, and we really appreciate it.
Over the past few days, we’ve been investigating a number of issues, and today we want to talk a bit more about the Steam Cloud save problems some of you have been running into.
From what we’ve seen so far, it can show up in a few different ways:
Playing on 2–3 different devices → and then suddenly not being able to log into the game anymore
Playing on a single device → but after saves get uploaded to the cloud, you can’t get past the main menu
Other odd behavior that’s hard to pin down and doesn't resolve after a simple PC restart
We know how frustrating this is, especially if you’re used to switching between setups without even thinking about it. We’re really sorry this is happening, and please know we’re actively working on it.
With so many different setups and devices out there, the tricky part has been pinning down the exact root cause. We’ve been trying to keep up with reports (mostly through Discord), but we know that’s not ideal for everyone. Thanks for sticking with us anyway.
For now, we recommend:
Avoid switching between devices if you can
Back up your save files manually from time to time
If you run into corrupted saves, turn off Steam Cloud before restoring from a backup
Game Client Save folder (if you play solo or self-host):
%LOCALAPPDATA%\\R5\\Saved\\SaveProfiles
Dedicated Server save folder:
R5\\Saved\\SaveProfiles
We recommend backing up the entire SaveProfiles folder in both cases. Also, if Steam asks which save to use, it’s generally safer to go with your local files whenever possible. Turning Steam Cloud back on can sometimes overwrite your local progress, which might set you back or undo your latest saves, so just be a bit careful there.
For now, we’re keeping Steam Cloud on. We may need to turn it off later, as fixing this in a controlled environment is much easier than trying to patch it live for everyone at once. Please stay tuned.
And again, thank you for the trust you’re giving us right now. We don’t take it lightly. We care a lot about this game and about you guys, and we’re doing everything we can to sort this out. It’s a long journey, but we’re in it together.
Much love,
Kraken Express
